Lukovdol: Memorial Site and Poetry Tradition
Accommodation in Lukovdol
Lukovdol lies above the Kupa River and is closely associated with the poet Ivan Goran Kovačić. His birthplace is the focal point of a memorial site with a museum, amphitheatre and monument; the town also has a long-standing poetry tradition and traces of history from different eras. Two questions are especially useful when planning your trip: Which aspects of the memorial site interest you, and which route details matter for your plans?
Memorial Museum and Poetry Tradition
The Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum is located in the poet’s birthplace and has a permanent exhibition dedicated to his life and work. Its themes include Goran and Lukovdol, his literary and journalistic work, the regional heritage, and Goranovo proljeće. If you are particularly interested in literature, his work and journalism are the most relevant topics; the section on Goran and Lukovdol, along with the regional heritage, offers a connection to the town. The memorial site also includes the renovated birthplace, an amphitheatre and a monument created by Vojin Bakić beside the house.
Since 1963, poetry gatherings called Goranovo proljeće have been held in Lukovdol on the first day of spring, March 21. The date gives the tradition a fixed place in the calendar; individual annual programmes may vary. If you want your trip to coincide with the poetry gatherings, check the programme for the relevant year. The museum and gatherings highlight different sides of the same cultural focus: the permanent exhibition covers the poet’s life and work, while the poetry gatherings provide a recurring date in the annual calendar.
Historical Traces
The town’s history includes several milestones from different periods. In the Middle Ages, Lukovdol was under the rule of the Frankopans. In the 16th century, the Ottomans burned the town down, after which it was rebuilt; the parish was founded in 1604. Together, these events span the period from the Middle Ages to the early 17th century.
Tetinja jama, situated above Lukovdol, also contains archaeological traces: ceramic finds from the cave date from the second millennium BC and from the 15th and 16th centuries. The finds thus reach far back in time and also extend to the centuries of the town’s later history. The cave was probably used as a refuge by local residents during Ottoman incursions.
