If you’re looking for a hotel in Vučnik, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you. The surrounding area offers literary and religious cultural sites, places of art, and trails with a range of focuses. Options span museum exhibits and historic architecture to routes for hiking or cycling.

Literature, churches and art

The Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum is located in the poet’s birthplace in Lukovdol. It presents his life and work through five exhibition themes: “Goran and Lukovdol,” “Goran as a Writer and Journalist,” “Goran with the Partisans,” “Goran’s Homeland,” and “Goranovo proljeće.” The displays also include ethnographic material from Gorski Kotar. The themes offer different perspectives on Kovačić’s life, literary work and regional surroundings.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary also stands in Lukovdol. It is one of the oldest churches in Gorski Kotar; according to the parish priest, the present building was constructed around 1573. The Late Gothic building has a single nave, a semicircular apse and a massive tower with a tall, pointed roof. These features give the church a distinctive architectural character.

The Chapel of St. Francis Xavier in the village of Rtić near Lukovdol is considered the oldest religious building in the territory of the Town of Vrbovsko. It underwent extensive restoration in 1713. In Plemenitaš, an art workshop has operated since 1996 in the premises of an old school and is considered a unique cultural center in Croatia. An artist exhibits her works in her own home; to date, she has created around 600 figurines. If you would like to visit this home exhibition, confirm access locally.

The sculpture trail “Staza skulptura – Park mladih umjetnika Plemenitaš” features 16 sculptures made of wood and mixed techniques. It can be visited year-round; check local access conditions before your visit. In the Kamačnik area, Panova staza offers a different focus: this themed experience trail centers on sound and features five music-education instruments—the gong, xylophone, horn, bells and stream organ.

Trails and the river landscape

For planning purposes, two routes can be compared by length. The first stage of the Camino Gorski Kotar, documented in 2026, runs from Kamačnik via Vrbovsko to Lukovdol and is about 17 km long. Route arrangements and dates may change, so check the latest plans before setting out. The Riblje–Lesci trail runs for 2.6 km through the Kupa Valley and is suitable for hiking or cycling. There are eight rest areas with benches along the route.

Walking paths in the castle park of Zrinsko-Frankopan Castle in Severin na Kupi lead down to the Kupa. A viewpoint offers views of the river and wooded valley; the park is protected as a monument of garden architecture. The castle interior is not open for visits. Check this visitor information before your trip.

Another event in the surrounding area is the Feast of the Assumption, Velika Gospojna: it is celebrated with particular observance at Gomirje Monastery every year on August 28. Its fixed calendar date sets this annual celebration apart from the trails and cultural sites, which help guide trip planning regardless of any particular date.

Regional cultural context

Vučnik is in the eastern part of the Kajkavian dialect area in Gorski Kotar. In the broader Vrbovsko travel area, the Kupa villages of Zaumol, Plemenitaš, Zapeć, Blaževci and Štefanci are considered notable examples of traditional architecture. This regional context adds another perspective on the area’s building and language traditions to the individual churches and cultural sites.
