Vinodol Municipality offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: the history of the Frankopans and Drivenik Castle, cultural sites in Bribir and Grižane, viewpoints, and trails with clearly specified lengths. There are also festivals and activities around Tribalj Lake.

Cultural Heritage in Drivenik, Bribir and Grižane

Drivenik Castle was built of stone between the 13th and 15th centuries. The Frankopans used it for defence and to control traffic through Vinodol. In Vinodol, Drivenik is considered the best-preserved and most attractive castle.

The Vinodol Law Code is also connected to the area’s history: it was written in Glagolitic script, and Bribir, Grižane and Drivenik are named among its signatories. The Putovima Frankopana cultural route is accompanied by an audio guide. It describes 20 sites, including the Bribir Interpretation Centre and Turan Tower. The audio guide is available in Croatian and English; QR codes on route totems in front of interpretation centres provide access. As on-site signage may change, check the QR information and audio guide availability locally.

Kuća Klović in Grižane preserves the memorial collection of Juraj Julije Klović. Turan Tower in Bribir is an interpretation centre for the Putovima Frankopana route. Before travelling, check access and opening hours for Kuća Klović, as well as access to Turan Tower.

Festivals and Local Culture

The Bribirskog prisnaca festival in Bribir helps preserve and share local heritage and offers visitors an authentic Vinodol experience. Ružica Vinodola is a contemporary festival inspired by Vinodol’s past. It recreates a tradition in which a leading girl was chosen from among the female grape harvesters. Dates and programmes for both recurring festivals vary from year to year; check the relevant edition before planning your stay.

Žlahtina is also part of the local culture: it is Vinodol’s best-known wine variety and is paired with local specialities. This offers another cultural point of interest alongside the castles, the history of the law code and the events.

Viewpoints and Trails

The Oči Vinodola system comprises six viewpoints, three of which are in Vinodol Municipality: Mahavica above Drivenik, Pridva above Grižane/Tribalj and Slipica above Bribir. From the viewpoints, you can see towards Velebit, the Velebit Channel, the Kvarner Islands and Učka, as well as across the valley to Grižane. Each viewpoint has signage and a parking area; there is space to turn around at or near the viewpoint.

When the viewpoint system was planned, locations near road connections and access suitable for buses or minibuses were envisaged. Confirm current road access before your visit. This lets you take the viewpoints’ locations and the stated sightlines into account without treating the planned access as confirmation of current access.

Hiking routes vary considerably in their course and length. Staza kamenih stupi is a circular route that starts and ends in Grižane. It is about 10 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 380 metres and includes more than 1,300 stone steps. The 28-kilometre ridge trail runs from Novi Vinodolski to Orljak Pass between Jadranovo and Drivenik. Staza Litica is 29 kilometres long and includes steep rock faces above the Vinodol Valley. It starts at Vanište mountain hut and ends below the Zebra ridge in the Uhnja area above Drivenik. Trail conditions and markings may change; check conditions before setting out.

For cycling, Route 303 runs from Bribir through Grižane, Antovo, Pridva and Slipica, and back to Bribir. Check the route conditions before setting out. This route offers a separate way to connect the named places by bike and should be distinguished from the hiking trails described above.

Tribalj Lake and Other Activities

Tribalj Lake is an artificial lake near Tribalj, just a few kilometres from the sea. Fishing takes place at the lake throughout the year, with catch and release required. Before setting off, check the current rules and access details with the local angling club. There is also a paragliding airfield in Tribalj. Before making specific plans, check the latest local information.
