Mljet – Karst Lakes, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Mljet
Mljet offers a range of ways to plan your trip: flooded karst valleys and protected landscapes are just some of its features, alongside archaeological and ecclesiastical heritage. If you’re looking for a hotel on Mljet, you can first consider whether nature, hiking or cultural heritage will shape your stay most.
Karst Lakes and Protected Landscapes
Veliko jezero and Malo jezero lie on the northwest side of the island. Both are flooded karst valleys filled by the sea, forming a rare geological and oceanographic phenomenon in the karst landscape. Veliko jezero is also home to the world’s largest recorded bush coral reef of the species Cladocora caespitosa.
Mljet National Park covers the northwestern third of the island and encompasses 5,375 hectares of land and sea. It is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean region. Saplunara offers a different landscape: it is protected as a significant landscape and includes the two sandy bays of Velika Saplunara and Mala Saplunara. Dense pine forest and Mediterranean vegetation surround the bays.
Sveti Marija and Historic Sites
The island of Sveti Marija lies in the southern part of Veliko jezero and covers 0.5 hectares. It is home to the Benedictine monastery, built between 1177 and 1198. The Church of St. Mary is a single-nave Romanesque building with Apulian influences. The island’s modest size and the monastery’s long construction period give it a clearly defined place in Mljet’s cultural heritage.
A Roman town with a palace in the style of a country villa developed in Polače in the 1st century. The remains of three early Christian basilicas have also been preserved there. These traces point to different historical periods: the Roman townscape belongs to antiquity, while the basilicas bear witness to the early Christian heritage.
Hiking and Nature Experiences
Odysseus’ Cave was formed when the roof of an underground karst chamber collapsed. A tunnel about 20 metres long connects it to the open sea. A marked hiking trail leads to the cave from Babino Polje. This makes the cave a specific hiking destination to include in your trip plans, without confusing it with the routes in the national park.
The Mljetska planinarska obilaznica (MPO) is 43 kilometres long and can be completed in three to four days. For the hike in Mljet National Park, Pomena, Polače or Goveđari are designated starting points; the route can be completed in full or in sections. This offers different time options: a multi-day route with a specified total distance, and a national park hike that can also be done section by section.
Events and Local Traditions
Noć vina is an eno-gastronomic event held every August in Pomena. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the specific dates in advance. Prožurska Blatina is also part of local tradition: eels have been caught there for centuries.
Lakes, protected landscapes, hiking routes and historic sites offer different ways to explore Mljet.
