Kolan on Pag: Nature, History and Cheese-Making Tradition
Accommodation in Kolan
Kolan on Pag offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: a historical trail, an ornithological reserve, an ethnographic collection, and the island’s cheese-making tradition. Landscape, local history, and regional cuisine are presented as separate points of interest.
Trail through Kolan’s Past
The hiking route “Putevima kolanjske prošlosti” links the Bunar, the 15th–16th-century Church of St. Jerome, the remains of a Roman villa rustica, and the protected Kolanjsko blato ornithological reserve along a circular route. It also passes dry-stone walls, traces of coal mining from 1756 to 1966, and the stone bridge near Suteska. The route brings together architectural and archaeological evidence alongside traces of earlier work.
Nature Reserve, Cycling Route, and Beach
The Kolanjsko blato – Blato rogoza nature reserve has been nationally designated since 1988 and covers 174.91 hectares. The circular trail connects the protected Kolanjsko blato ornithological reserve with historical points of interest. Nature conservation and local history thus come together among the themes of the hiking route.
The Put Girenice cycling route starts in Kolanjsko polje and follows a gravel road towards the Kolanjsko blato–Rogoza ornithological reserve. Its starting area, surface, and direction distinguish it from the hiking route. Since trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
Sv. Duh Beach is 1 km from Kolan; the shallow water extends up to 50 m from the shore. Facilities and beach conditions may change, so check the current situation at the beach before your visit.
Daily Life and Work in Kolan
The Kolan Ethnographic Collection was founded in 1978 by KUD Bartul Kašić. Exhibitions in a konoba (traditional tavern) and a household show the daily life and work of the people of Kolan. The collection may evolve over time, but its cultural focus remains local life and work.
While the trail brings together different traces in the landscape, the collection turns its attention to people’s everyday lives. Together, they offer two distinct perspectives on Kolan: the history visible in places and buildings, and the work and daily life at the heart of the collection.
Paški Sir and the Regional Cheese-Making Tradition
The Fešta od sira has been held in Kolan on the island of Pag since 2015 and is dedicated primarily to promoting Paški sir. Visitors can also discover the gastronomy, cultural heritage, and traditions of Pag Island. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the latest dates.
You can also taste and buy Pag cheese at smaller dairies and family businesses in the Kolan and Mandre area. Offerings may vary from one business to another, so check before visiting whether tastings or purchases are available.
The event and the businesses offer different ways to explore the subject of cheese: the Fešta od sira focuses on promoting Paški sir and the island’s traditions, while the dairies offer the opportunity to taste and buy cheese. This allows you to choose between a cultural event and a visit to local cheese producers during your trip.
