Those interested in traditional architecture, sacred art and local traditions will find several distinct cultural themes in Gornja Voća. These include the Virtual Zagorje Hiža on Gruntišće Hill, the Chapel of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and historical accounts associated with Voćansko Ivanje. Together, they convey different aspects of local history—from domestic life to religious imagery and festive customs.

The Virtual Zagorje Hiža: A Home and a Place of Interpretation

The Virtual Zagorje Hiža is a traditional single-storey house dating from 1917. Its broad oak beams are stacked horizontally and coated with clay and straw. The year refers to the house; the interpretation focuses on the lives of people from the Voća area around a hundred years ago. The architectural form and the portrayal of everyday life are thus connected in time, without describing the same thing.

The presentation combines holograms, 3D technology, wall-mounted tablets and an interactive table. In this way, a traditional house form meets digital interpretation. The technical elements may change over time; if a particular format is important to you, check its current availability in advance. The Hiža is located on Gruntišće Hill and can be visited by prior arrangement with the Općina Donja Voća. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm your booking before you arrive.

Chapel, Altarpieces and Wayside Shrine

The Chapel of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist in Gornja Voća was built in 1973 and painted by local artists. The chapel contains three large altarpieces. They depict the birth of John the Baptist, Jesus being baptised by John in the Jordan, and John in prison before his execution. Together, these subjects form a pictorial programme that draws on different episodes from the saint’s life.

Another sacred landmark is the Baroque wayside shrine Trpeći Krist, dating from around 1770. It stands on the summit of nearby Kogil breg. The shrine was destroyed during the Second World War and restored in 2014. Its creation, destruction and restoration give its history a clear chronology.

The stone Stations of the Rosary also broaden the view beyond a single building: nine stations extend across Klenovnik and Gornja Voća and are listed as cultural heritage. The cultural heritage of the area is therefore represented both by individual buildings and by a series of stations spanning two settlements.

Voćansko Ivanje and Local Traditions

Voćansko Ivanje in Gornja Voća is associated with the long-standing celebration of Ivanje and the Feast of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist in the Voća area. On 26 June 2021, the programme at the Ethno House included an art colony commemorating Slavko and Stjepan Stolnik. The same programme revived Ivanjski krijes, an old custom from Voća, together with the several-hundred-year-old song “Sveti Ivan kresa kuri”.

This historical programme item brings together festive tradition and a tribute to the two artists. It can also be considered alongside the Chapel of Saint John: the festival relates to the celebration of Ivanje and the birth of Saint John the Baptist, while the chapel’s altarpieces depict episodes from his life.

Špilja Vindija in a Broader Context

Vindija Cave is listed under Gornja Voća in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods. In the wider destination of Općina Donja Voća, Špilja Vindija is protected as both a cultural monument and a natural monument. Fossil analyses show that Neanderthals lived in the cave more than 40,000 years ago. This archaeological time horizon adds a much earlier dimension to Gornja Voća’s history of architecture and festivals.

The cultural highlights differ considerably: the Hiža connects house-building with digital interpretation, the chapel and wayside shrine represent sacred art and history, and Voćansko Ivanje brings together customs and a tribute to local artists. This can help you decide how to explore Gornja Voća, depending on which of these themes interests you most.
