Hiking and cycling opportunities are among the main attractions in Ivanec, alongside cultural and historical sites. Mount Ivančica reaches 1,060 metres at its summit; four marked trails lead up from the area around Ivanec. When planning your trip, it is worth noting the differences between the routes: distances, walking times and descriptions of their courses are not all provided in the same way.

Hiking on Mount Ivančica and Pilgrim Routes

Mount Ivančica offers both a gentle ascent suitable for family outings and more challenging trails for experienced hikers. A marked circular route, the Ivanečka planinarska obilaznica, connects eight places at the foot of the mountain. It is 18.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of about six hours, although the duration depends on pace and conditions.

The Ivanečki romarski put begins in front of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Ivanec and ends at the Marian shrine in Marija Bistrica. The pilgrim route is 28 kilometres long and takes about eight hours, including a one-hour break. It is marked with a white cross on a yellow square; designated rest areas and drinking-water springs help you find your way along the route. Check their condition before setting out. Trail conditions and markings can also change, so it is a good idea to check information about your chosen route before departure.

The two time estimates are not directly comparable: the one-hour break is already included in the time for the pilgrim route, whereas the approximately six hours for the Ivanečka planinarska obilaznica is given as walking time. If you are planning a hike, this distinction can help you estimate the time required more accurately.

Cycling and Cultural Routes

The Ivanec Cycling Route is a 63-kilometre circular route with starting points at Trg hrvatskih ivanovaca and on Frankopanska Street. The Ivanec Cool Tour cultural route can also be explored by bicycle or on foot. These offer different ways to explore the area: a cycling tour described by its length and circular layout, and a cultural route that is open to both cyclists and walkers.

The area around Mount Ivančica is also part of the range of activities on offer: Ivanec has easier and more challenging hiking trails, cycling routes through the surrounding hills, and the Žgano vino spring. Those interested in the connection between mountaineering and culture will find another point of interest at the Mountaineering Museum.

Mountaineering, the Old Town and Religious Buildings

The Mountaineering Museum was founded to promote mountaineering as a way of life, with Mount Ivančica as its central natural landmark. The museum hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and book and project presentations, including the event “Noć muzeja.” Students and groups can visit the museum by prior arrangement. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The visitor centre is located in the only surviving building in the Old Town of Ivanec complex. It provides tourist information, brochures and leaflets; its terrace is also used for outdoor cultural and educational activities during city events. Archaeological excavations at the Stari grad Ivanec site uncovered finds from Roman times. The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Ivanec was built in the 18th century and took its present form in the 19th century. These places add two different historical perspectives to the nature and hiking experiences: archaeological finds at the site of the old town and the architectural history of a church.

City Park, the Bistrica and Events

Ivanec City Park was transformed from a neglected pond and meadow into an English garden. An old linden tree there is regarded as a symbol of the city; its age is estimated at more than 600 years. The park also has a pavilion, used throughout the year for various events. The event programme may vary.

The Bistrica stream flows through the centre of Ivanec, forming cascades along the way. The difference in elevation between its source and mouth also made it possible to build a hydropower system with 20 structures, including mills and sawmills. The Ivanečki bajeri lakes tell a different story about the landscape: they formed after underground mining shafts collapsed and are now used for fishing.

Ivanec Town Days are celebrated on 24 June in honour of John the Baptist. The festival includes a multi-day programme of exhibitions, concerts, and entertainment and sporting events. During Town Days, visitors can also enjoy the traditional dish Ivanečki kotlić; its preparation and availability may vary from year to year. Check the latest event dates and programme for your travel dates.
