Donja Višnjica can be explored through three distinct interests: the architectural and artistic history of the parish church, traces of archaeological periods in the surrounding area, and a Marian pilgrimage route through a wooded gorge. These themes offer different perspectives for planning a trip. At the church, the focus is on its architecture and sacred furnishings; the cave and hillfort lead to different historical periods; the route combines a religious purpose with a distinct succession of landscapes. This allows you to decide what to focus on during your stay before looking for a hotel.

Baroque Church: Building History and Furnishings

The Baroque parish church was built between 1640 and 1666. It was expanded with the chapels of Saint Joseph and Saint Valentine, giving the building a cruciform floor plan. The floor plan describes the church’s layout and highlights an important architectural feature. Together with the chapels, the church can therefore be viewed not only through its Baroque character but also through specific elements of its development.

The furnishings include Baroque altars. Beside the parish rectory stands a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 17th century. The paintings in the sanctuary were created between 1756 and 1768 and are attributed to the workshop of the Slovenian painter A. J. Lerchinger. They therefore date from a later period than the church’s construction. The workshop attribution places the paintings in an art-historical context without presenting them as the painter’s own work. The architecture, altars, statue and paintings each provide a different perspective on the church’s artistic and architectural history.

Archaeological Traces in the Surrounding Area

Nearby landscape and historical sites include the Sutinska Valley and Mačkova špilja cave near Goranec. The archaeological layers in the cave span from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. The hillfort of Kukelj lies on Ravna gora; its remains date from the Late Bronze Age to antiquity. These periods distinguish the two archaeological sites: Mačkova špilja spans a timeframe extending into the Middle Ages, while Kukelj is a hillfort with remains dating from the Late Bronze Age to antiquity.

Kukelj is difficult to access; reaching it may be restricted or physically demanding. If you plan to include the hillfort in your itinerary, check local access conditions before visiting.

Marian Pilgrimage Route Through the Sutinska Gorge

The Marian pilgrimage route begins at the parish church in Donja Višnjica and descends towards Žarovnica. It passes through the wooded gorge of the Sutinska stream, by Sutinsko vrelo, and then climbs towards the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows on Jelenac Hill. The transition from the descent to the later ascent shapes the sequence of trail sections; the church, spring and chapel provide clearly named landmarks along the route. As a pilgrimage route, it combines a religious character with wooded scenery, making it a different focus from visiting a single building or archaeological site.

If you include the route in your travel plans, check local trail conditions and access before setting out on the hike.
