Archaeology and church architecture are the clear thematic focus of Biskupija. Crkvina, Stupovi and Lopuška Glavica represent different architectural forms and historical evidence. For planning your trip, you can consider specific questions: How do the church complexes differ, what historical role is attributed to Crkvina, and what other topics are part of the broader destination of Općina Biskupija?

Church Architecture and History in Biskupija

Crkvina is the largest archaeological site in Biskupija. The basilica there had three naves and a three-part westwork, as well as a western bell tower. In the 9th century, the church served as a mausoleum for a Croatian dynasty. “Three-naved” describes a church divided into three naves; the westwork is the western part of the building. Together, these features describe both the floor plan and the design of the western side.

There was also a three-naved basilica at Stupovi, in this case with three apses. The building was pre-Romanesque and dates to the 9th century. By contrast, Lopuška Glavica had a single-nave longitudinal church with two apses. The comparison makes the differences clear: Crkvina and Stupovi were three-naved, while the church at Lopuška Glavica was a single longitudinal structure. The documented architectural features also differ, with a westwork at Crkvina and a different number of apses at each site. A total of 54 graves have been positively identified around the church at Lopuška Glavica.

The Biskupija Archaeological Park is described as the most important archaeological site in Croatian national history and as the largest medieval archaeological site in Croatia. About 400 graves dating from the late 8th to the 15th century have been found at Crkvina. This approximate number and long time span differ from the 54 graves positively identified around the church at Lopuška Glavica.

The Church of St Mary in Biskupija is associated with the earliest known depiction of the Virgin Mary in Croatian art. A memorial church was built on the foundations of this church between 1937 and 1938, based on a design by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Thus, early medieval church forms and a later memorial stand side by side in Biskupija, although the two buildings do not date from the same period.

Cycling Route and Trip Planning

The Lopuška Glavica cycling route follows the Knin–Potkonje–Biskupija–Kovačić–Knin route and passes through Biskupija. It is 17.06 kilometres long and has a total ascent of 133 metres. Check the current signs and trail conditions before setting out; route information may need to be verified on the ground. For planning purposes, the route can therefore be assessed using two specific figures: distance and total ascent.

Regional Context: Općina Biskupija

Within the broader destination of Općina Biskupija, the municipality lies in Kosovsko Polje, south of Knin. The 12.5-kilometre-long Kosovčica, a left tributary of the Krka, flows through Kosovsko Polje. Velika Promina rises above the municipality’s western karst plateau. These geographical and landscape details complement Biskupija’s archaeological focus with the broader setting of Općina Biskupija.

The Villa Rustica in Orlić is also part of the regional archaeological context. The site consists of the remains of a Roman villa dating from the 2nd century; foundation remains of the residential and service areas can be seen at the villa. The history of the Diocese of Knin is also part of this broader context: it was founded in 1040. The Bishop of Knin resided at the historic site “Pet crikvah na Kosovi,” which is identified with present-day Biskupija.
