Municipality of Ervenik: Zrmanja and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Municipality of Ervenik
A 24-kilometre stretch of the Zrmanja, which is 69 kilometres long in total, runs through the Municipality of Ervenik. The Zrmanja has both mountainous and lowland characteristics and is rich in flora and fauna. Alongside this river landscape, archaeological sites and architectural heritage shape the municipality. Nature and history therefore stand out as two distinct themes in the Municipality of Ervenik.
Zrmanja and Sport Fishing
The SRD Natura fishing zone on the Zrmanja runs from the bridge in Ervenik to Jankovića buk and also includes the Krupa River. A fishing licence is required for sport fishing in SRD Natura’s waters; SRD Natura sells the permits. In addition, the stretch of the Zrmanja from Kusac to the bridge in Ervenik is designated as a sport fishing area for brown trout. If you are planning your stay around fishing, check the association’s latest information about permits in advance.
Archaeological Sites and Fortifications
Archaeological sites can be found throughout the Municipality of Ervenik. They span numerous historical periods and attest to the area’s continuous settlement. The Ivoševci–Mokro Polje–Radučić archaeological zone is an important part of the municipality’s architectural heritage. Named structures include Otonska gradina in Oton and Grad in Radučić, both partially preserved fortifications dating from the late-medieval architectural period. Keglevića gradina in Mokro Polje preserves the remains of a tower belonging to the Croatian noble Keglavić family.
The aqueduct from the Glib spring via Stara straža and Očestovo to Radučić is also one of the significant elements of the Municipality of Ervenik’s architectural heritage. These named places and structures give the archaeological zone concrete points of reference: the remains of fortifications, a tower and an aqueduct sit alongside sites from different periods.
Sacred History and Regional Collection
The Hram Svetog apostola Luke in Mokro Polje was built in 1537. For many years in the past, the Mokropoljsko Jevanđelje, an important monument of Slavic written culture, was kept there. In Radučić, Crkva sv. Georgija is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Property as a protected cultural property under code Z-6039; the register entry dates from 2013.
Mokro Polje is also home to a museum of antiquities, or ethnological collection. It bears witness to the everyday life, customs and crafts of the Dalmatian population and includes old photographs from the region. Alongside archaeological and sacred heritage, it also offers a glimpse into daily life and regional memory.
Mokropoljski susreti
Mokropoljski susreti are another connection to local tradition. A report from 2017 describes the event as taking place annually in Mokro Polje; at the time, it had already been held for more than half a century. The 2017 edition featured a cultural, sporting and entertainment programme. Younger generations could learn about traditional competitions such as donkey racing, stone throwing, tug-of-war and balota.
