Kijevo: Discover hiking and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Kijevo
Kijevo combines experiences in nature with cultural history. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the multi-day Dinara Hiking Circuit from the other hiking options and archaeological sites: the time estimate applies to the route, while the difficulty levels apply to the hiking trails.
Hiking and route planning
The Dinara Hiking Circuit begins in Knin, crosses Dinara and ends in Kijevo. The tour takes two to three days. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Trekking in Kijevo takes you over hills, through karst fields and small settlements, and on to clearings. Trails are marked on most routes; difficulty levels range from 1 to 5. The information describes different aspects: the two- to three-day duration applies to the Dinara Hiking Circuit, while the scale classifies hiking trails by difficulty.
The hiking options offered by the Općina Kijevo also include Trail 501 Kozjak–Kijevski bat, which starts in Kijevo. The starting point can be reached by car from a hamlet via a village road. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Archaeological sites
A late antique villa rustica dating from the 3rd to 4th century is located in Krstače. The Old Croatian necropolis at the source of the Cetina dates from the 9th to 10th century and was used until the 15th to 16th century. A total of 1,162 graves were examined there during investigations. The Church of St. Michael in Kijevo is one of the cultural and historical monuments on the Dinara Hiking Circuit.
History in the Općina Kijevo
The remains of Glavaš Fortress lie within the Općina Kijevo, on the slopes of Dinara above the hamlet of Glavaš. The fortress was built within a prehistoric hillfort, and a remnant of the former rampart survives. Glavaš Fortress is classified as protected immovable cultural heritage in the Općina Kijevo. From the fortress, you can see the valley around the source of the Cetina and the strategically important crossing into Bosnia via Uništa.
The Krstače archaeological site is also classified as protected cultural property in the Općina Kijevo. The conserved rustic villa near Krstače covers 340 m². More than 700 stećci are preserved around the Church of St. Spas in the Općina Kijevo.
In the wider destination of Općina Kijevo, the Krčić is a stream about 20 kilometres long that connects Knin, Kijevo and Vrlika. A cycling route in the Općina Kijevo passes through Podinarje, follows the Krčić stream and continues towards Knin.
Mountains and outdoor activities
The highest peak of Kozjak is Bat, at 1,206 metres. At Kozjak, a rock face about 150 metres high is considered a challenge for hikers and climbers. Dinara, Kozjak and Gnjat are designated areas for free climbing. Check local conditions when planning a specific climbing trip.
The sources of the Cetina offer opportunities for recreational and competitive fishing. Before fishing, check the rules and access arrangements separately.
Cultural events
Since July 2014, literary evenings with Croatian writers, poets and musicians have been part of Kijevsko lito in the hamlet of Bajani. The Kijevski književni susreti bring residents of Kijevo and visitors together at several locations for a cultural event. Check the current dates of both events before planning.
