Kistanje Municipality can be explored through a range of destinations: Burnum is known for its archaeological remains, the Krka flows through the municipality, and part of Krka National Park lies in the east. There are also the Kraljevska cycling route and paths near Pištavac. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you are particularly interested in archaeological sites, a specific route, or the themes of water and the monastery.

Burnum and its archaeological remains

At the Burnum archaeological site, visitors can see the surviving arches of the command building, Croatia’s only surviving military amphitheatre in the area of the village of Ivoševci, and several walls of the military training ground. Burnum is also the 1st-century Roman military camp where the Kraljevska cycling route ends. The visible arches, amphitheatre and walls offer different points of reference for understanding the site as an archaeological destination.

Cycling route and access to Burnum

The Kraljevska cycling route begins at the branch office of the Krka National Park public institution in Skradin, passes through Rupe and Kistanje, and ends in Burnum. The starting point, places along the way and destination are therefore clearly identified. Burnum can be reached by road from the direction of Skradin, Drniš or Knin. This information about road access concerns Burnum; it does not describe the cycling route.

There is a separate parking instruction for the Roman Road: the parking area can be reached from Ivoševci, from the Kistanje–Knin direction, on the right bank. This direction applies to the Roman Road and should therefore be distinguished from the roads from the direction of Skradin, Drniš or Knin.

The Krka and paths near Pištavac

The Krka River flows through Kistanje Municipality. Part of Krka National Park lies in the eastern part of the municipality. The river and the national park are two specific points of reference for planning a trip, while the descriptions of the paths each indicate their own access points and routes.

The Trošenj–Pištavac path can be reached from Kistanje, from the reception area of Krka Monastery, or via Čučevo; follow the signposts. Access to the Pištavac path is from the reception area of Krka Monastery. There is an open-air parking area at the start of the path. The gravel path descends steeply to the Krka and returns along the same route. When planning, it is therefore important to account for the return along the same route; the description does not mention a loop.

The route is therefore quite different from the Kraljevska: the latter is a cycling route with stops in Skradin, Rupe, Kistanje and Burnum, while the Pištavac path descends steeply to the Krka and returns along the same route. If you are choosing between the two, the information about transport, route and return journey offers practical guidance.

Culture and water in Kistanje

In Kistanje, the “Krka – vrelo života” Nature Interpretation Centre presents the fundamental importance of water to life on our planet in a modern, interactive way. This gives it a different focus from Burnum and its archaeological remains. Krka Monastery is located in Carigradska draga; its reception area is also an access point for the Pištavac path.

At the Kistanje I entrance, a parking area and an information centre are listed as visitor facilities.
