Accommodation in Knin
When looking for a hotel in Knin, you can base your choice on the focus of your stay: the city’s history is especially evident at the fortress, while the museum collections cover various periods and regional everyday culture. Nature and outdoor activities add another dimension to the cultural experience, including Dinara, the Krčić River, cycling and horseback riding. Consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
Fortress History and Museum
Construction of Knin Fortress began in the 9th century during the Early Croatian Republic. The complex consists of five connected sections and stands 345 metres above sea level, about 100 metres above Knin. A movable wooden bridge is located at the entrance to the fortress.
The fortress houses the permanent exhibition “Storm ’95”, which opened in 2015 and presents historical documents and artefacts. Knin Museum is also located within the fortress. The Knin Museum at the fortress has a permanent exhibition devoted to ethnographic artefacts. Other exhibition themes in Knin include archaeology, cultural history, and geology and palaeontology.
The museum collections include fossils and geological samples from the area around Knin, archaeological material from prehistory to the late Middle Ages, as well as local furniture, handicrafts and traditional costumes. This gives visitors different points of interest, from geological finds and early history to regional everyday culture.
Historic Churches in Knin
The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Knin has a clearly documented building history. The original structure was built in 1866 and destroyed in 1944 during the Second World War. A new church was built in its place and consecrated in 1971.
The Church of St Anthony is an 18th-century symbol of Knin. It was built on the probable site of an Early Croatian church and has been renovated several times.
Dinara and the Krčić River
The natural landscape offers a different focus. At 1,831 metres, Dinara’s summit is the highest peak in Croatia; climbing it requires extensive mountaineering experience. The Krčić River rises from karst springs at the foot of Dinara and forms a deep, picturesque gorge in places. These are two distinct natural attractions: a challenging summit and a river with stretches of gorge.
