Those who choose the Municipality of Primošten for their stay can explore Primošten according to a range of interests: the old town of Staro selo tells the story of its former island location, while churches, the statue of Our Lady of Loreto, cycling routes and coastal views offer further highlights. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a walk in the town centre, a cycling trip towards the surrounding villages and a look at the maritime activities on offer.

Staro selo and its architectural history

The old town of Primošten, Staro selo, was originally the island of Capocesto, also called Gola glava. It was later connected to the mainland by a causeway built up from the sea. In the old town centre, you will find paved streets with Šalizi and preserved old stone houses. The promenade around Staro selo is ideal for a stroll, combining historic impressions with a Mediterranean atmosphere and sea views. A walk lets you consider the town's former island location alongside today's views of the coast.

Churches, monument and Loreto tradition

The parish church of St. George was built in its current, larger form in 1760 and is protected as an immovable cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. The single-nave rural church of St. Roch offers a different setting: it stands in a landscaped park and is also protected. At the entrance to Staro selo, the monument Ribar pod osti stands at Pisak, in the shallow waters of Mandrać. These three places show different aspects of Primošten's cultural heritage—from the parish church and the rural church in its landscaped park to the monument in the shallow water.

On Mount Gaj, the statue of Our Lady of Loreto stands at a lookout point. It is 17 metres high, including its pedestal. When visibility is good, the view takes in the Primošten peninsula and the Primošten and Šibenik archipelagos; the lookout is a popular destination, especially at sunset. The pilgrimage site of Our Lady of Loreto is also part of international Marian pilgrimage routes associated with Loreto.

Traditional dress is also part of local heritage: Primošten lace has been part of it for centuries and was first mentioned in writing in 1550. On the eve of Primošten's most important feast, the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto, fires spelling the words “Ave Maria” are lit around the parish church and on Mount Gaj. The fires are part of a recurring tradition; the exact programme may vary. The Pekljica lace-makers' association offers lace-making courses and demonstrations, and has held lace workshops at Primošten Primary School for years. Dates may change; if you are interested, check what is currently on offer.

Cycling routes and wine country

Two different cycling routes offer an active way to explore the area. The 10 sela cycle route starts in the centre of Primošten and climbs towards the village of Supljak. Route Gaj, number 105, leads to Mount Gaj and the statue of Our Lady of Loreto; along the way, views open up over Primošten's vineyards. The destinations described are therefore different: the route towards Supljak and the route to the lookout on Mount Gaj. Check road and trail conditions locally, as they can change.

A distinctive connection with the local wine landscape can be found near Primošten: the Bucavac vineyard lies three kilometres south of the town. It is protected as an immovable cultural asset and consists of small plots enclosed by low dry-stone walls. The plots can only be worked by hand. Bucavac's Babić grapes are among the most highly prized in Croatia. At the Vinas Mora winery in Primošten, natural wines are made from native grape varieties, including Babić, as well as other local grapes. If you are planning a visit, check the current options in advance.

Sea views and culinary experiences

Mala Raduča beach offers a special view of Staro selo and is particularly suited to watching the sunset in the evening. Visibility depends on the weather. Boats with or without a skipper can be rented at several beaches in Primošten; availability may vary. These offer two different ways to enjoy time by the water, without requiring a fixed programme.

Primošten's cuisine is characterised by Mediterranean dishes, particularly fresh fish, seafood, olive oil and locally grown vegetables. Combined with the area's connections to Babić wine, this creates a culinary focus that brings together regional produce and the coast. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether your trip will focus more on walks through Staro selo, visits to cultural sites, cycling routes or time by the sea.
