The Municipality of Ružić lies between the mountains of Svilaja and Moseć. Petrovo polje forms its central landscape; the Čikola River flows through the field. Otavice lies on the eastern edge of the polje, while Svilaja rises behind the village with its pastures and forests. The municipality and its history can thus be explored through a variety of places and landscapes.

Meštrović’s family history in Otavice

The sculptor Ivan Meštrović lived in Otavice until the age of 16. The Meštrović family home remains the centre of the village. The Crkva Presvetog Otkupitelja was built between 1928 and 1930 as the family tomb. It is the final resting place of Ivan Meštrović and his closest family members, including his parents, siblings, wife Olga and their children. It is a ten-minute walk from the family home to the church. His life story, home and tomb provide concrete points of reference for the history of the village.

Other buildings also tell of Otavice’s past. The former malaria station was built right next to the family home and was later damaged. The former primary school is a building of cultural and historical as well as architectural value. Both structures add other facets to the village’s history beyond Meštrović’s family legacy.

Churches and early evidence

The present-day Župna crkva sv. Ilije was built in Kljaci in 1871. Remains of an Old Croatian church dating from the 9th to 10th century were found nearby. In Gradac, remains of the early Christian church of sv. Petra are preserved in the crypt of the parish church. The church Hrvatskih mučenika was built in Čavoglave. These religious sites trace a path from early Christian and Old Croatian remains to the present-day form of the parish church in Kljaci; they are also located in different parts of the municipality.

Ancient settlement phases in Umljanovići

Municipium Magnum, an important urban centre in the Dalmatian hinterland, stood on Balina glavica in Umljanovići during the first centuries AD. In the decades before the birth of Christ, the fortified Illyrian-Dalmatian city of Sinodium stood on the same site. Two distinct ancient settlement phases are therefore found here: the fortified city before the birth of Christ and the later urban centre. Comparing the periods helps distinguish the two names and the eras to which they belong.

Petrovo polje and the Čikola

Petrovo polje occupies the central part of the Municipality of Ružić, and the Čikola flows through the field. Near Otavice, the Otavac stream flows into the Čikola. A once-important mill and small rapids also remain along a stream near Otavice. These landscape features offer a different focus from the churches and historic settlement sites: here, the field, the course of the river and Svilaja’s pastures and forests take centre stage.

For trip planning, this offers a clear thematic guide: Otavice connects Meštrović’s family history with the surrounding landscape; Kljaci, Gradac and Čavoglave represent religious heritage, while Balina glavica brings together the ancient settlement phases. Depending on whether you are more interested in the landscape, churches or early local history, you can take these different themes into account when choosing where to stay.
