Tisno combines a historic town center with churches, festivals and paths that appeal to a range of interests. The old town center lies on the island side, below Brošćica Hill. To get your bearings in the wider destination of Općina Tisno, it is also important to know that the town lies on both sides: Tisno extends partly onto the mainland and partly onto the island of Murter; a mechanical drawbridge connects the two parts of town.

Old Town, Stone Buildings and Squares

In the historic center, you will find irregularly built rural stone buildings and distinctive galleries. The original stone paving has been preserved in some places. The town also has 18th-century townhouses and the Katunarić Palace. The name Tišnjanske Palače refers to eleven surviving villas. Together with the narrow streets and broad squares, they create a townscape where different scales sit close together.

The long waterfront promenade also defines Tisno. Restaurants serving predominantly traditional fare add to the town’s character. In the wider destination of Općina Tisno, salted sardines and Dalmatian pršut with cheese and olives are considered Tisno culinary traditions.

Churches and Religious Festivals

Several churches offer historic points of reference in the town. The Church of the Holy Spirit was built in 1548 and restored in the Baroque style in 1640. The Church of St. Andrew was built in 1606 on the hill of the same name, south of the island-side settlement. The Church of St. Roch stands on the waterfront in the part of Tisno called Rat.

Above Tisno, on Brošćica Hill, is the shrine of Gospe od Karavaja, with a chapel built around 1720. The Feast of Our Lady of Karavaj is celebrated in Tisno every year on May 26. Pilgrims come from the surrounding counties and further afield; the exact festival program may vary.

A program from 2024 describes “Igre na korentu” as a water-sports spectacle in the strait beside Tisno’s movable bridge. If you plan to attend this event, check the dates and format again.

Promenades, Cycling and Diving

The Tisno–Jezera educational nature trail is laid out as a lighted promenade with themed rest areas. It introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of Murter Island. As infrastructure and interpretation may change, check the current conditions before your visit.

A marine educational trail with seven information panels also runs along the promenade in Sv. Andrija Bay. It can be used for freediving and scuba diving. Access and equipment may change; check these details before planning your dive. Organized dive centers in Tisno cater to beginners and experienced divers alike. Operators and seasonal availability may change.

Three designated cycling routes pass through Tisno. Before setting out, check local information on trail conditions and signage. For a different kind of trip, coastal paths on Murter offer the chance to circle the island and return to your starting point. Conditions on these paths can vary by season.

Tisno offers a range of things to explore: historic buildings and religious traditions, a promenade with nature-focused features, and designated opportunities for cycling and diving. Festival dates, trail conditions and diving arrangements are the key details to check when planning your trip.
