Kaštel Lukšić: Vitturi Castle, Park and Culture
Accommodation in Kaštel Lukšić
Kaštel Lukšić’s cultural identity is shaped by Vitturi Castle, the historic park and sacred buildings. A botanical garden adds to its green attractions, while seasonal events provide their own highlights. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the lasting history of the buildings and park from the dates of the cultural program for each season.
Vitturi Castle and its construction history
The restored Vitturi Castle houses the Kaštela Town Museum and other cultural institutions. It is considered a cultural center for exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances. Vitturi Palace was completed in 1564. Its north side had two defensive towers and a drawbridge, which was replaced in the 18th century by a single-arch stone bridge. This sequence makes the building’s development easy to trace: the drawbridge was part of the earlier complex, and the stone bridge was added later.
Sacred architecture also offers a distinct historical perspective. The Gothic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption dates back to 1530. The late Baroque parish church contains paintings, sculptures and a 15th-century altar tomb attributed to Juraj Dalmatinac. The local cultural heritage thus spans a Gothic church, the furnishings of a late Baroque parish church and an older tomb. These different features can be considered as separate themes for a stay, without combining them into a single building history.
Vitturi Park and Botanical Garden
Historic Vitturi Park lies on the coast of Kaštel Lukšić and covers 7,450 square metres. It has been designated a natural and cultural monument since 1968. Its preserved landscape features include boxwood ornaments, cypresses, Aleppo pines, stone pines, laurel and exotic trees. The grounds are regularly maintained. Their shaped boxwood forms and variety of tree species give the park a different character from the town’s buildings and religious artworks.
The OŠ Ostrog Botanical Garden is another part of the area’s green heritage. Covering about four hectares, it includes northern and southern garden areas, an olive grove, a greenhouse, a nursery, and sports and recreation areas. Its collection comprises around 1,000 plant varieties from around the world, mainly from Mediterranean and subtropical climate zones; the collection may change. The garden has been protected as a monument of landscape architecture since 1986. It is considered Croatia’s only protected school garden monument. The park and garden therefore differ not only in their design but also in their respective protection status.
Cultural program and local stories
The Miljenko and Dobrila program was held for the 13th consecutive time in 2026. It presented life in Kaštela in the past through the local dialect, dowry and wedding customs, traditional songs and dances. The guided storytelling tour “Tragom Miljenka i Dobrile” led from Vitturi Castle and the museum to the church where the couple is buried, linking the route with stories from Kaštela’s history. The 2026 summer program also included the costumed interpretive walk “Kaštelanski dvorci i legende” in Kaštel Lukšić. These offerings complement the preserved historic buildings with seasonal ways of bringing their stories to life. If you are planning to visit for an event, check the dates of the relevant program in advance.
