Gizdavac offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: the locally rooted Mačkare and the cycling route to Bunari Rajčica, which passes through the village. The Chapel of Saint Luke and prehistoric sites are also nearby. Those looking to compare cycling routes can also consult information about mountain biking routes in the Općina Muć; these add regional options to the local points of interest.

Mačkare: a distinctive cultural heritage

Gizdavac is part of the annual Mačkare carnival procession in the Muć region. The procession is considered protected intangible cultural heritage and is marked by a tall, debarked banner tree and the figures of Dida and Baba. More broadly, in the Općina Muć, a debarked poplar tree about ten metres tall is carried as a banner. Among the older carnival traditions that have been preserved is a group representing a wedding procession and featuring Dida and Baba. This connects Gizdavac to the traditional Mačkare motifs found across the Općina Muć.

The Chapel of Saint Luke and local tradition

The Chapel of Saint Luke stands by the cemetery wall in Gizdavac and was carved from a single piece of Brač stone. Inside the chapel is a centuries-old statue of Saint Luke, restored by academic painter Zvonimir Mihanović. Saint Luke is considered the patron saint of Gizdavac. A 2014 thesis at the University of Split, based on local ethnographic material, notes that the traditional celebration in his honour included all-day Masses attended by people from other villages.

Prehistoric sites in Gizdavac

Prehistoric features also form part of the local landscape: Gizdavac has a prehistoric burial mound, and Gradina Bakića Umac is a prehistoric site. These two named places complement the religious and cultural heritage with evidence of prehistoric times.

Cycling route to Bunari Rajčica

A cycling route to Bunari Rajčica passes through Gizdavac. Nearby, the Rajčica site lies between Nisko and Gornji Matasi. It has a large livestock watering trough and ten wells arranged in a circle, surrounded by pastureland and dense vegetation. The cycling route thus connects to a specifically named landscape site, whose arrangement of wells and surroundings make it a distinct point of interest.

Općina Muć: landscape and orientation

The Općina Muć provides the broader geographical context: Muć lies in the Dalmatian Zagora at an elevation of about 450 metres, at the foot of 838-metre-high Moseć and near 1,508-metre-high Svilaja. The Mućko polje stretches from Neorić to Donje Postinje. Gizdavac is one of the municipality’s 17 settlements. These details place the village within a wider landscape without conflating the municipality’s features with Gizdavac’s local character.

The D-56 state road runs through Gizdavac and Gornji Muć. At the level of the Općina Muć, the D56 runs from Drniš through Muć to the Klis-Grlo interchange, where it connects to the D1 towards Split. The D219 links the municipality with Sinj and continues to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. This distinguishes the road running through Gizdavac from the wider connections of the Općina Muć.

Mountain biking routes in the wider municipality

The Općina Muć has numerous quiet gravel roads and forest tracks that offer favourable conditions for mountain bikers. The Andetrij MTB route is 23.3 kilometres long, has 205 metres of elevation gain and a difficulty rating of 2, and is intended for recreational cyclists. Borovača is 25.5 kilometres long, has 518 metres of elevation gain and a rating of 4, and runs mostly through the forested area of the Muć municipality. Zmina is 47.5 kilometres long, has 752 metres of elevation gain and is also rated 4; due to its length, it is described as the most demanding route. By comparison, Andetrij has the lowest stated difficulty rating, while Zmina is the longest of the three routes. Borovača stands out for its predominantly forested course.
