Brnaze – Archaeological Traces and Living Traditions
Accommodation in Brnaze
Brnaze appeals to travelers who want to include cultural history and local traditions in their travel plans. Its attractions range from early medieval church remains and the newer parish church to folklore and a recurring cultural festival.
Archaeological Traces at MijoljaÄŤa
At the MijoljaÄŤa archaeological site, a late medieval cemetery with 109 excavated graves overlies the remains of an early medieval six-apsed church. The ruins include the Old Croatian Church of St. Michael; its six apses date from the 9th or 10th century. The church was probably built on the foundations of an early Christian church. The site therefore allows the early church architecture and the later burial layer to be distinguished chronologically.
The finds include stone fittings from an Old Croatian church, part of an early Christian altar screen, and several ancient monuments. Together with the church remains, they give the archaeological site several historical layers. Brnaška glavica also bears traces of historical Christianity, adding to the picture of the area’s religious history.
Churches and Local Culture
The new parish church of St. Nicholas Tavelić stands on the site of the former church, which was built in 1972. On May 1, 2023, the new building was blessed and brought into liturgical use. Its architectural features include a 40.5-meter-high bell tower, four bells, and a cross. The exact date of the blessing provides a chronological reference point within Brnaze’s more recent church history.
KUD Brnaze is also part of the area’s cultural life. The association preserves traditional customs, original and choreographed dances, and songs, and was founded in 1975. For travelers, it offers a different perspective from the archaeological sites: the focus here is on inherited forms of expression and music, rather than the architectural remains of past eras.
Festival and Pilgrimage Route
The Brnaški dernek is a recurring three-day local cultural festival in Meljača. The program includes traditional sports, a children’s Alka competition, folklore performances, amateur singers, and demonstrations of traditional agricultural practices. The program brings together different forms of local cultural life. If you are planning to travel for the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.
The pilgrimage route of Our Lady of Sinj also passes through Brnaze: the section from Kukuzovac to the shrine in Sinj runs through the first houses of the village. If the pilgrimage route is part of your reason for traveling, you can include this section in your plans and consider it as a focus in its own right alongside the churches and archaeological traces.
Road Connections and Choosing a Hotel
Brnaze lies on the Split–Sinj–Knin road corridor. At the intersection, it is also connected to the Brnaze–Trilj–Imotski road. These named road connections help with planning your arrival and further destinations. If you are looking for a hotel in Brnaze, you can base your choice on what you want to do during your stay and include the road connections in your personal travel plans.
