Before 1880, Podgorje developed under the name Kozja Glava in the southwestern part of the Virovitica wine-growing area. The town’s history is thus rooted in a wine-growing region. Hiking and wine routes also offer a way to explore the local landscape.

Explore the hiking and wine routes

The “Virovitički vidici” circular hiking trail runs through the Podgorje area. It is 10 kilometres long; the stated walking time is about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the elevation difference is 93 metres. These details can help you plan how much time to allow for the route. Check trail conditions before setting out. The Podgorje section passes through vineyards, weekend houses, meadows and wooded areas, with views of Virovitica and Hungary. The landscape and views may change gradually along the way.

The “Virovitički vidici” wine route leads to Podgorje. There, paths branch off the main road and lead to the vineyards on the hillside. The description, published on 25 January 2009, notes that these vineyard paths offer sweeping views of Virovitica, the Drava and Hungary. Viewpoints and access details may change over time. Here, “Virovitički vidici” refers to two routes: the circular hiking trail through the Podgorje area and the wine route to Podgorje.

Cycling, fishing and a nature trail

In the area around Podgorje, the nine Virovitica ponds offer year-round recreational fishing. The nearby, four-kilometre-long “Virovitička Bilogora” nature trail takes about 90 minutes to walk and has 11 information boards about local flora and fauna. The “Put Šarana” cycling route runs alongside the ponds and is over 10 kilometres long. It is described as a unique singletrack cycling route. The walking times can be compared directly: about 90 minutes for the nature trail and about 2 hours and 45 minutes for the circular hiking trail.

Events and cultural heritage

In the wider Podgorje region, the Virovitica-Podravina County “Spiritual Experience Route” is a multi-day cultural route through town centres and picturesque villages. It includes around a dozen churches and covers themes such as architecture, ethnography, history, nature, recreation and pilgrimage.
