Sveti Đurađ: Wine Traditions, History and Routes
Accommodation in Sveti Đurađ
Sveti Đurađ brings together historical connections, wine and carnival traditions, and hiking and cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, these different highlights can help you plan: in the village, the chapel, traditions and routes take centre stage; the Virovitica Ponds are part of the wider regional area.
History and Local Customs
Sveti Đurađ has been mentioned under various names in medieval sources since 1280; the parish is first mentioned in 1332. The village has a branch church dedicated to Saint George. At the Vincekovo celebration in January 2023, the programme included a mass at the Chapel of St. George, the ceremonial pruning of grapevines and the sprinkling of sausages with wine. The “Sveti Vinko” Winegrowers’ and Fruit Growers’ Association from Virovitica celebrates the feast day of Saint Vincent every year in Sveti Đurađ, in cooperation with the Virovitica City Tourist Board.
Carnival also has a local custom: during the Pokladni svatovi, men and women switch roles. The KUU “Franjo Ebling” Cultural Association organises “U Varoš na poklade,” a folklore event celebrating these carnival customs. The association is also linked to the revival of the traditional production of Repovača. This very strong fruit brandy is considered something of a trademark of Sveti Đurađ. Local culture thus ranges from community customs to a distinctive fruit-brandy tradition.
Hiking and Cycling
The circular “Virovitički vidici” hiking route includes viewpoints in Sveti Đurađ and the local Chapel of St. George. From the chapel, the route offers views as far as Hungary. If you are planning the loop, check current route conditions before setting out, as they may change.
For cycling travellers, the “Podravski krug” route, 63 kilometres in total, leads to Sveti Đurađ and reaches the foothills of the Bilogora Mountains there. Another route name is the “Virovitički vidici” Wine Road: it starts at the edge of Golo Brdo, passes through Podgorje and Sveti Đurađ, and continues to Antunovac and Milanovac. These details offer different ways to explore the surrounding area: a circular hike with viewpoints, a 63-kilometre cycling route and a wine road through several villages.
Destinations in the Wider Region
Near the Virovitica Ponds, in the wider region around Sveti Đurađ, is the four-kilometre “Virovitička Bilogora” educational trail. The loop takes about an hour and a half at an easy walking pace and includes eleven information boards about the flora and fauna of Virovitička Bilogora. The ponds form a series of nine bodies of water and are considered one of the region’s most fish-rich fishing areas; recreational and sport fishing is possible there year-round.
The “Staza Dabrova” route also starts and ends at the Virovitica Ponds. Free parking and a picnic area are available there. Check the condition of these facilities before your trip, as it may change. The educational trail, ponds and cycling or hiking routes thus offer different ways to explore the area, while keeping regional destinations distinct from the village centre.
