Donji Karin offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: the river and karst landscape of the Karišnica, religious and archaeological heritage, and a bathing beach. If you are looking for a hotel in Donji Karin, you can decide in advance which of these themes is especially important for your trip.
Karišnica and the Protected Landscape
The Karišnica in Donji Karin is part of the Karišnica and Bijela significant landscape area, which has been protected since 2009. Its catchment area near Donji Karin covers 58 km² and consists largely of steep karst slopes.
The Natura 2000 site HR2001316 Karišnica and Bijela lies between Gornji Karin and Donji Karin. It includes the wider Karišnica area, the estuary at Karin Beach, the Bijela gorge and stream, the Tuvina coastal wetland belt, and Brežine Hill. Its habitats include wetlands, coastal and hilly landscapes, the Bijela waterfalls, and underground habitats at the Karišnica and Bijela springs. The focus is therefore not only on the river and karst slopes, but also on a variety of wetland and coastal areas.
Old stone mills and their canal systems line the Karišnica riverbed. They add a built feature reflecting the landscape’s history of use. Visitors interested in nature and cultural heritage will find two themes that meet along the same river, while remaining distinct from one another.

Monastery, Church and Archaeological Heritage
The Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Immaculate Holy Mary are in use and can be visited. Information panels and signposts provide additional guidance; nevertheless, check visiting arrangements again before your trip. The monastery was built in the late Middle Ages on the foundations of a 9th-century Benedictine monastery. A stone interlace cross is set into the wall of the monastery corridor. Franciscans have been active in the area since the 15th century, the monastery once had schools, and it has a small, valuable library.
The archaeological zone of Gradina Miodrag is also part of the protected cultural heritage. It includes remains of ancient Corinium and medieval Karin. The Miodrag site is considered an important archaeological location and dominates the landscape; it is overgrown and difficult to access. Check the situation before visiting.
The remains of the Church of Saint Mark (Nicholas) are listed as protected immovable cultural property under code Z-2626. They are located on county road Ž 6048 between Donji Karin and Popovići. The remains are overgrown and difficult to make out; their condition may change following conservation work. Remains of medieval towers from the 13th and 14th centuries are also visible in the area, where there are no signposts.
