Cultural and landscape attractions offer several ways to plan a trip to Galovac. Crkvina is known for its archaeological building remains; the parish church Crkva sv. Mihovila Arkanđela and the Gulan complex add architectural and ethnographic heritage to the picture. Bunar Galovac and marked water springs in the municipality offer other points of interest. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether to focus your stay more on churches and architectural history or on rural heritage and cycling.

Crkvina: Basilica, Foundations and Crypt

Excavations at the Crkvina site uncovered the remains of an early Christian basilica. It included a narthex, or entrance hall at the church entrance, and a side room on the southern side. These architectural features give an idea of the layout of the church building: the narthex marks a distinct entrance area, while the southern room is an additional component. This makes it possible to understand the basilica not only by its name, but also through specific elements of its design.

The site also contains the foundations of a smaller church-like building dating from the 17th or 18th century. West of this smaller building lies a late antique vaulted crypt. The dates refer to different findings: the basilica is early Christian, the crypt is late antique, and the foundations belong to a building from the 17th or 18th century. Crkvina thus brings together archaeological findings from different periods, which do not all belong to a single church building.

Church and Art in Galovac

Another point of interest is the parish church Crkva sv. Mihovila Arkanđela, considered an important architectural monument and dating from 1760. Crkva sv. Mihovila in Galovac also houses an oil painting from 1887. It depicts Saint Michael, John the Baptist and Saint Jerome. The two dates refer to different things: 1760 is the date of the church, while 1887 is the date of the painting. If you are interested in sacred architecture, you can consider the building and the artwork as related, but chronologically distinct, aspects.

Ethnographic and Rural Heritage

The Gulan complex is part of Galovac’s ethnographic heritage. It complements the archaeological focus on buildings with a different kind of cultural heritage. When planning a cultural trip, you can take this distinction into account if you would like to explore the ethnographic side of the area as well as its architectural history.

Bunar Galovac is a natural well; its cistern was built in 1947. This date refers to the cistern and provides a specific historical point of reference among the area’s landscape attractions. There are also marked water springs along roads in the municipality of Galovac, where cyclists can stop to rest and refresh themselves with spring water. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can consider these springs as possible resting points. The municipality also has potential for sports and recreational tourism, as well as rural tourism. This allows you to weigh up a cultural and historical focus for your trip against an approach more oriented towards cycling or rural tourism.
