Podlug and its rural architecture

Several hamlets in Podlug are listed as a Level 1 rural-urban unit. Traditional rural architecture has been preserved in the hamlets; some buildings are being restored, and plans are in place to make them more valuable for tourism. A specific point of reference for the area’s history is Didova kuća: the Kamber family built the house in 1882. The construction date anchors the history of the house in time, while the preserved architecture and ongoing restorations concern the built character of the hamlets.

Cultural history in the Benkovac area

Kaštel Benković is a cultural monument dating from the 15th century and is designated a protected cultural monument of national importance. The Benkovac Local History Museum offers expert guided tours for groups at the Kaštel. The group format is relevant when planning if you would like to take this tour together.

The Local History Museum also offers expert guided tours for groups at the Kličevica site in the Benkovac area. Advance booking may be required. The museum also helps organize workshops and courses to preserve traditional crafts. If one of these courses is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Lake Vrana: Wetland and trails

In the area around Podlug, Vransko Lake Nature Park is an internationally recognized wetland of great importance to endangered and rare bird species in Europe. The reserve is home to 102 bird species during the breeding season. The species count may be updated by the park administration; the figure of 102 refers to the breeding season.

The Vrana Panorama Trail runs through the ornithological reserve to Prosika and is 18.7 km long. The 18 km Birds of Prey educational trail follows the Panorama Trail, runs along a gravel track and is particularly suitable for cycling. The information answers different planning questions: the Panorama Trail description specifies its route through the reserve and Prosika as its destination, while the educational trail description focuses on the surface and cycling. Since the educational trail follows the Panorama Trail, the two route descriptions are directly connected. Trail conditions and services may change; check them before setting out.

A cycling route on the Babin škoj peninsula passes the remains of a Liburnian fortress and a Venetian watchtower. This adds another cultural-history point of interest along a cycling route to the natural environment and birdlife.
