Bibinje stretches for four kilometres along the Adriatic coast, with its beaches facing the islands off Zadar. Beaches with different types of terrain, a cycling route through the centre and hinterland, and protected cultural monuments give the town several distinct highlights. When planning your hotel stay, consider whether you are most interested in beach time, cycling, cultural history or attending an event.

Beaches and Activities Along the Coast

Punta is a pebble beach on the eastern edge of Bibinje, next to D-Marin Marina Dalmacija. Punta Rožica, Bibinje’s main beach, is located in Staro selo. It has paved sunbathing areas, showers and changing cabins. Near Punta beach, there is a restaurant, a café and beach volleyball courts where tournaments are held. Facilities and event arrangements may change; check the situation at the time if you are planning your visit around them.

The beaches also differ in their terrain: Lipauska has a sandy seabed and attracts many visitors and locals. Šulterova vala is considered a beach popular with the youngest swimmers. Volleyball is played daily at Punta, Punta Rožica and Lipauska; availability may vary by season. The town’s description thus offers several specific points to consider when planning a beach day, while making clear that the beaches do not all have the same character.

Cycling Between the Centre and Hinterland

Bibinje Bike Adventure is a 27-kilometre cycling route with an elevation gain of 290 metres, covering the centre of Bibinje and its hinterland. There are about ten points of interest along the route, including several important churches, sites of old wells and a panoramic viewpoint. For those who want to explore Bibinje beyond its coast, this route’s described stops bring together religious, local and landscape-related themes.

Bibinje is also home to a diving club called Sv. Roko. If you are planning a dive, check the options locally before making arrangements. For volleyball and cycling, other information is especially useful: the route’s distance and elevation gain are specified, while volleyball availability may vary by season.

Churches and History

The Church of St John the Baptist stands in the centre of the peninsula, in the heart of the historic old town. It is considered the first church in Bibinje and the first source of Christianity in the town. The church houses a collection of sacred objects from the 15th century. The cultural and historical ensemble of the settlement is also part of Bibinje’s protected cultural heritage.

The Church of St Roch also offers several historical points of interest: it was first mentioned in 1673, when it was rebuilt after the Great Turkish Attack. The oldest surviving altar dates from 1680; the main altar was created by Michiel Coste in 1768. These dates mark different stages in the history of the church and its furnishings.

The remains of the Roman Biba-Jader aqueduct in the Lonići area date from the late 1st or early 2nd century, during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The aqueduct was part of a 40-kilometre water supply line from Vrana to Zadar. The name of the locality Petrina also points to the area’s history: it is named after the small 8th-century Church of St Peter.

Events and Local Cuisine

Raspivano Bibinje has been held since 1977 and is considered the oldest and best-known klapa event in Zadar County. Dates and programmes vary. If you want to plan your stay around this event, check the dates for your travel period.

At Bibinjski kogo, visitors can watch the preparation of a traditional Bibinje dish and sample it: Manestrun consists of rolled noodles coloured black with squid ink. Event dates may vary here too. Numerous restaurants and konobas between the Taline promenade and Trg Sri sela serve local specialities, including fish, shellfish, seafood, grilled meat, roast lamb, as well as kroštule and fritule. Individual venues’ offerings may change.
