Pirovac: History and Bay
Accommodation in Pirovac
Pirovac combines a town history shaped by the Middle Ages with viewpoints, bays and water activities. When planning your stay, you can consider these aspects separately: the historic settlement and its buildings tell of earlier forms of the town; at the Makirina promenade and around the bay, the landscape and coast take center stage. If you are looking for a hotel, compare the specific details of the offers according to which of these interests matter for your trip.
Local History and Buildings in Pirovac
The Old Settlement of Pirovac is a medieval settlement and fortress. It was first documented in 1298 as the property of the noble Šubić family. Until the mid-19th century, Pirovac was a walled island; at the beginning of the 20th century, land reclamation connected the historic settlement to the mainland. The dates mark different stages: the settlement’s early mention and later changes to its form.
The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built in the 18th century on the foundations of an older church dating from 1506. Its façade features a statue of the Archangel Gabriel by Bonino da Milano. This building thus brings together the older church, its later construction and a named work of art.
Vrata sela also preserves traces of the fortifications: the gate was built in 1505 by Count Petar Draganić to defend against the Ottomans and features remnants of walls from the 16th century. A Templar cross is carved at the foot of the gate. Draganić-Vrančić Castle was expanded and decorated in the Neo-Renaissance style; the design of the chimney shows Moorish influence. The castle had a valuable family library. Over the centuries, valuable objects and documents significant to Croatian history were also kept there, including the will of Faust Vrančić.
Further art-historical details can be found at various religious buildings. The Draganić-Vrančić family cemetery chapel contains a Gothic sarcophagus with a relief of the Virgin Mary by Bonino da Milano, dated to 1429. A Glagolitic inscription from 1495 is carved into the side entrance of the Chapel of St. George. Pirovac’s recurring summer cultural program includes fishermen’s evenings, concerts, exhibitions and folklore performances. Check the dates and program for your travel dates before your trip.
Bay, Views and Outdoor Activities
Pirovac has numerous natural beaches and sandy bays. The island of Sustipanac lies directly off the town and is used for swimming and sunbathing. The Makirina promenade, with its viewpoint, offers panoramic views across Pirovac Bay and the Kornati archipelago. Check access conditions before visiting. Pirovac Bay is considered a habitat for schools of dolphins; individual sightings are not guaranteed.
In the wider destination of Općina Pirovac, walking and cycling trails are well signposted and suitable for different fitness levels. The Makirina hill area is described there as a micro-ecological and ornithological reserve and is included in Natura 2000. These details add nature and landscape themes from the wider region to the view of the bay.
Boating and Other Excursions
Boating from Pirovac provides access to the surrounding bays and the island of Sustipanac. Marina Pirovac is located in the town center and can accommodate up to 200 boats. It is considered a starting point for excursions, cruises and regattas near the Kornati and Krka national parks. The options on the water therefore vary: along with destinations around Pirovac, sailing excursions near the two national parks are also an option.
Another activity in the area is freshwater fishing at Lake Vrana via the Prosika Channel. Check the applicable permits and restrictions in advance. This distinguishes time spent on the water in the bay from a fishing trip inland.
