Sveti Petar na Moru: History, Beach and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Sveti Petar Na Moru
If you’re looking for a hotel in Sveti Petar na Moru, the local attractions can help shape your trip: visible traces of the Trajanic Biba–Jader Aqueduct, historic sites, a coastal cycling route and Tustica Beach. The following highlights show how the cultural and historical attractions differ from the waterfront activities.
History and Pilgrimage Route
The Trajanic Biba–Jader Aqueduct ran through the area of Sveti Petar na Moru, and its remains are still visible today. The village takes its name from the 18th-century Church of St Peter the Apostle. The church is also a landmark on the Camino Zadar: the pilgrimage route passes through Sveti Petar na Moru, and a Camino stamp is available at the church. If you plan to collect the stamp, check its availability before your trip.
Pećina Buta Cave and Prehistoric Traces
Pećina Buta Cave lies in a gorge between two hills, and its chamber is 25 metres deep. During brief investigations in 1957, fragments of Roman pottery and flint scrapers—possibly dating from the Neolithic period—were found in and in front of the cave. According to local accounts, Pećina Buta Cave served as a shelter in bad weather for wealthier shepherds from Bukovica. Local shepherds also used the cave for shelter from the rain until the 1960s.
Pećinska gomila and Vukašinov krug are Iron Age hillforts. Together with the finds from Pećina Buta Cave, they represent different periods: possible Neolithic traces, Roman pottery and Iron Age structures. The archaeological attractions therefore include both tangible finds and the dating of historic structures, as well as accounts of the cave’s traditional use.
Cycling Route and Tustica Beach
The Turanj–Sveti Petar na Moru cycling route follows the coastline. It is fully paved, signposted and separated from the main road. In Sveti Petar na Moru, the route ends near the waterfront promenade and a beach. The cycling route is therefore defined by its course, surface and location at the destination, while the archaeological attractions focus mainly on finds, dating and the cave.
The new Tustica Beach is located at the entrance to the new settlement on the edge of Tustica. If you plan to cycle the route, check the signs, conditions and local access arrangements before setting off. Before visiting the beach, you should also check the local conditions.
