When planning a trip, Dunkær can be considered from three perspectives: local history, nearby destinations and connections to other places on Ærø. The information ranges from a windmill and historic trading sites to coastal scenery, shelters and hiking trails.

Windmill, trading sites and local history

Dunkær Mølle is located in Dunkær at Møllegyden 36. A 1989 museum publication counted the mill among the surviving windmills whose cap and body were intact, while the sails were missing. This classification records its condition at the time.

The Dunkær/Rise hike includes the site of a Viking trading post; Dunkær Kro is recommended as a starting point. In the area near Dunkær, textiles and jewellery were traded at the Havsmarken trading site. So both a historic site connected with a hike and former trading activities are among the topics you can consider when planning your trip.

The history of the Ærø Redningskorps is also connected to Dunkær: the corps was founded there as a combined transport company, fire brigade and rescue station. This adds the founding of a local organisation to the information about buildings and trade.

Coastal scenery and Sjoen

Vejnæs Nakke, a two-kilometre-long coastal cliff reaching up to 20 metres high, is located near Dunkær. There is parking near both ends. The length and maximum height describe different features of the cliff: one measurement indicates its extent, while the other gives its greatest stated height.

Near Dunkær, Sjoen has two shelters with a total of nine sleeping places. They are reserved for visitors who arrive under their own power, for example by rowing boat, bicycle or on foot. If you plan to stay overnight there, the arrival requirement is therefore something to consider. The remains of Sct. Albert, a Viking Age fortification, are also located at Sjoen.

Connections and routes on Ærø

Thirty-six kilometres of the Øhavsstien run across Ærø. The hiking route is 220 kilometres long in total and covers a large part of the South Funen Archipelago. The two distances refer to different scales: 36 kilometres are on the section across Ærø, while 220 kilometres describe the entire route. This helps place the island section within the wider course of the hiking trail.

Free bus services run from Dunkær to Marstal, Ærøskøbing and Søby. If you would like to include one of these places in your trip, check the timetable for your travel day. Dunkær also has a butcher’s shop and a restaurant; check their respective opening hours before you travel.

When looking for hotels in Dunkær, you can first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: the town’s history, nearby destinations or connections to other places on Ærø. This lets you base your hotel comparison on your own travel plans.
