Vissenbjerg: Nature, Views and History

The “Udsigten” viewpoint is 129 metres above sea level. From there, you can see Brændholt Bjerg and Frøbjerg Bavnehøj. Afgrunden offers a different focus: the drainage gorge is 400 metres long and 16 metres deep. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different nature themes – at Udsigten, the elevation and named viewing destinations are the highlights, while at Afgrunden, the gorge’s shape and dimensions take centre stage.

The nature area near Vissenbjerg is part of a protected forest and nature area of about 315 hectares south of Vissenbjerg. The nature area contains several grazed sections with calcareous fens. Vissenbjerg Skov is designated as a natural forest and left to develop naturally, encouraging a greater variety of plant and animal life. The sculpture Bitten Røverdatter stands near the Vissenbjerg Idræts- & Kulturcenter. The sculpture Vissen Per has its own, more precisely described location: it stands in the part of the forest north of Vissenbjerg’s main road, away from the main forest area.

Getting around Vissenbjerg

The Vissenbjerg Bakker can be reached from Odense by FynBus; the bus journey takes less than half an hour. Check the latest departure times before travelling. At Møllesøen near Vissenbjerg, there is a combined fishing and viewing platform. It is next to the car park and is easily accessible for wheelchair users. If you would like to fish there, check the local regulations first.

Another specific place to visit is the dog forest in Vissenbjerg, which covers about one hectare, is fenced and has two entrances. These details differ from the landscape features of the Bakker: here, the focus is on the size and layout of a single place, not on views or geology.
