Faaborg: Art, History and Waterfront Routes
Accommodation in Faaborg
Faaborg offers different ways to plan a trip based on your interests: art and town history are just as much in focus as routes through the town and activities on the water. If you’re looking for a hotel in Faaborg, the museums, the Klokketårn and routes through or along the town can help you choose the focus of your stay.
Art and History in Faaborg
The Faaborg Museum is a Gesamtkunstwerk combining painting, sculpture, architecture and furniture art. It is housed in an architectural gem dating from 1915 and is closely associated with the Funen painters. The year the building was constructed places the museum in its historical context; its connection to the Funen painters provides another focus for an art visit.
Arresten offers insight into prison life through its cells, courtyard and courtroom. The prison building and courtroom are part of the permanent exhibition. Visitors can also rent an iPad to solve the fictional mystery “Murder in the Jailhouse,” which is set just after the Second World War. As availability of this activity may change, check before your visit whether it is being offered.
The Faaborg Klokketårn is a remnant of the town’s first church, Skt. Nikolaj Kirke. Visitors can climb the 31-metre-high tower and enjoy views over Faaborg and the archipelago from the top. Its carillon has 38 bells and plays four times a day. Access and playing times may change; check both before your visit.
Faaborg Miniby offers a different historical perspective: its scale model shows Faaborg as it looked in 1890, at a scale of 1:10. From 1932 to 2021, Den Gamle Gaard served as Faaborg’s town museum.
Hiking and Cycling
The Øhavsstien passes through Faaborg’s historic streets. The sections of the trail in the Faaborg area are considered family-friendly and offer good places to rest along the way, as well as access to drinking water. This combines a route through the town with practical opportunities to take a break. The route and conditions may change; check the current route before setting out.
For cycling plans, two other routes offer different geographical bearings. The Østersøruten follows the coast through Faaborg and Det Sydfynske Øhav. The Herregårdsruten also passes through Faaborg. This lets you choose between a route explicitly described as following the coast and one for which Faaborg is named as a location along the way.
By the Water and Exploring on a Guided Tour
Faaborg Havnebad can be used for various water sports or as a starting point for them. These include sea kayaking, open-water swimming, diving, water polo and kayak polo. The list includes both activities in the water and activities for which the swimming facility can serve as a starting point.
The Langelinie waterfront promenade runs along Faaborg Fjord from Havnebad to Klinten Park and the Klinten holiday centre. This is another specific point of reference for planning a trip by the water, alongside Havnebad’s water sports and the routes through Faaborg. Guided tours of Faaborg can be booked throughout the year. If you’re planning a guided tour, check booking options and prices in advance, as both may change.
