Tranekær combines cultural history and landscape with specific outdoor themes: the castle, church and mill sit alongside medicinal herb gardens, TICKON and marked trails. When planning your trip, you can focus on architectural and art history, knowledge of plants, or a route on foot or by bike. Each of the places described has its own particular focus.

Castle, Church and Mill History

Tranekær Castle is the oldest inhabited secular house in Denmark. Tranekær Church contains an altarpiece painted by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg in 1847; it was his last. The castle and altarpiece offer different points of historical interest: the castle stands out for the unique status of the house, while the church painting connects the artist, the year it was created and the story of the artist's work.

The present-day Dutch windmill at Tranekær Castle Mill was built in 1846. The magazine building houses an exhibition on the history of milling on Langeland. The cultural themes thus range from an inhabited house to a single work of art and the history of a craft.

Medicinal Plants and Signage

The Medicinal Gardens in Tranekær have the largest collection of medicinal plants in Northern Europe, with more than 800 different plants. All the plants in the individual gardens are labelled; the trees in the arboretum are labelled too. The labels give the Danish and Latin names, the medicinal significance and the country of origin. This means the diversity of plants can be explored through several specific aspects: names, medicinal classification and origin.

All the plants in the Children's Medicinal Garden are edible. This feature adds another specific aspect to the gardens' signage. Those interested in medicinal plants will therefore find a clear distinction within the site, alongside information on names and origins.

Art in the Park and the Landscape Around Tranekær

TICKON – Tranekær International Centre for Art and Nature – adds art in the park to the cultural offering. Since 1993, more than 20 Danish and international artists have created works there. The art installations and sculptures are made from natural materials and designed to decay slowly, returning to earth and stones. The transformation and return of the materials are therefore part of the artistic concept.

The listed houses offer a different view of the area: visitors can stroll among them in Tranekær. The surrounding area has forests, hedgerows and wetlands shaped by ice 20,000 years ago. Nature appears here on two levels: as the material used in TICKON's works and as the landscape around Tranekær, shaped by the Ice Age.

Walking and Cycling

When it comes to trails, it is worth distinguishing between walking and cycling. The 9-kilometre section of the Øhavsstien runs between Tranekær and Dageløkke along Langeland's west coast. The Øhavsstien is an unpaved trail exclusively for walkers. Blue pictograms showing a small white walker and the words “Øhavsstien” mark the route.

The 22-kilometre Tranekær Castle Route is a cycling route through forests, open fields and historic villages; Tranekær Castle is its highlight. The comparison is clear: a 9-kilometre coastal section with named endpoints versus a 22-kilometre cycling route with stretches through forests, fields and villages. This makes it possible to take the different route profiles into account when choosing between walking and cycling.
