Brenderup combines a natural setting around Brenderup Skov with a varied local history. The town lies between Varbjerg Strand, Båring Strand and Skåstrup Strand. It is also home to Fyllested Mølle with the Morten Korch Museum, Kærsgaard Gods with its historic main building, and Brenderup Church.

Mill history and early electricity generation

The Morten Korch Museum is housed in Fyllested Mølle, a historic building near the Kærsgaard Transport Museum in Brenderup. Since the 16th century, the mill used the power of the Store Å to grind flour. The site thus tells the story of how the river was used, closely connected to the mill’s earlier work.

When visiting the museum, you can see the old water turbine and generator through the floor. They once generated electricity for all of Brenderup and contributed to the town’s early industrial development. Milling and electricity generation offer two connected perspectives on the site: processing grain and the later use of hydropower to generate energy. Tours of the museum can be arranged on any day of the week; arrange your visit before travelling.

Kærsgaard Gods: manor house, transport and agriculture

The history of Kærsgaard Gods can be traced back to the 15th century. At the time, the estate was one of the two principal estates in Brenderup Parish. The present main building dates from 1815 to 1817. It is 7.5 metres long and 9 metres deep, whitewashed and topped with a blue-glazed hipped roof. The building was listed in 1918.

The estate also has a transport museum with more than 60 carriages and horse-drawn work wagons, as well as a larger collection of older agricultural equipment. Its themes therefore extend beyond the history of the building: transport and agriculture are also part of the estate’s story. If you want to compare historic buildings with the history of technology and everyday life, Kærsgaard Gods offers a different perspective from the mill or the church.

The building phases of Brenderup Church

Brenderup Church was built in the 13th century as a Romanesque ashlar church with a nave, chancel and apse. However, its building history did not end with this original structure. Numerous late Gothic alterations and additions changed its appearance between around 1450 and 1550. Today, it is a typical, imposing village church in western Funen. Its chronology makes it an example of how a building has changed over several periods.

The church complements the other historical themes through its architecture: at Fyllested Mølle, the focus is on the earlier use of hydropower; at Kærsgaard Gods, it is on the history of an estate and its holdings. At Brenderup Church, you can distinguish the original Romanesque form from the later late Gothic changes.

Craftsmanship in Frederiksminde

Flensted Mobiles operates from Frederiksminde, an old village school. The mobiles are handmade with precision and care by skilled homeworkers from Funen. Flensted Mobiles has distributed mobiles worldwide since 1953 and across three generations. This strand of craftsmanship offers a different emphasis from the history of buildings and technology: it draws attention to the making of moving objects and to a craft associated with Frederiksminde.

Forest, coast and getting your bearings

Surrounded by Brenderup Skov, Brenderup lies in a natural area between Varbjerg Strand, Båring Strand and Skåstrup Strand. Its forest and coastal connections give the local area a different focus from its museums and historic buildings. Another landmark is the One-Mile Route, which starts and ends in Brenderup at the Brenderup Activity Centre.

For planning your visit, the themes are easy to distinguish: the mill and turbine represent the history of technology; Kærsgaard Gods brings together a manor house, transport and agriculture; and the church tells the story of several building phases. Flensted Mobiles adds craftsmanship to the mix, while Brenderup Skov and the three beaches mentioned provide a link to the landscape. When looking for a hotel in Brenderup, consider which of these themes matters most to your stay.
