Føns offers a range of things to explore: Fønsvang Sø is known for its scenery and birdwatching, while Føns Strand has facilities by the water. Føns Mølle, Føns Kirke and Boyes Banke add historical interest. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between nature watching, time at the beach and the individual places with historical significance.

Fønsvang Sø and the landscape

Fønsvang Sø covers 102 hectares and is the second-largest lake on Funen. It is also part of an internationally protected Ramsar site. The area figure indicates the lake’s size, while the comparison with other lakes on Funen provides a regional point of reference. Its Ramsar status adds a conservation perspective to this geographical context. For nature watching, you can observe white-tailed eagles, kingfishers and breeding waders at Fønsvang Sø. A birdwatching tower and a car park are available at the lake. Check the current status of the facilities before visiting.

Around Føns Mølle, wetlands, meadows and forests provide habitats for animals and plants. While Fønsvang Sø is described in terms of its size, protected status and birdwatching, the focus at the mill is on the variety of habitat types.

Føns Strand and its facilities

Føns Strand has shallow water, a bathing jetty and a beach meadow with tables and benches. There is a car park and toilets near the beach; there are also three rescue stations and a slipway for boats. The beach meadow, access to the water and boating facilities can thus be considered as different aspects of the place. Check the current status of the beach facilities before travelling, especially if you rely on seasonal services. At Føns Strand, the bathing jetty and beach meadow shape the experience by the water; at Fønsvang Sø, birdwatching is a key activity.

Mill, church and historical remembrance

Føns Mølle is a historic watermill with roots in local agriculture. Føns Kirke was dedicated to Saint Anne before the year 1200. Its furnishings include a carved wooden altarpiece from around 1500 and a pulpit dating from 1663. The dates range from an approximate dating of the altarpiece to the specific year of the pulpit. The church is set in a landscape surrounded by Fønsvang Sø and the Little Belt.

Boyes Banke in Føns is also a historical memorial: the site is associated with the execution of Jens Henrik Christiansen Boye in 1856. These different historical connections stand side by side—the church’s dedication and furnishings, and a memorial commemorating a specific event from the 19th century.
