When looking for hotels in Veflinge, you can consider the destination from different perspectives: at its heart is the whitewashed village church, with its architecture and historic furnishings; on the edge of the village, Veflinge Kirkeskov offers paths and facilities for spending time outdoors. The area’s railway history and memories of the occupation add further points of interest. This lets you weigh up architectural history, the local past and the landscape as different interests for your trip.

Church and local history

The whitewashed Veflinge Kirke stands in the centre of the village. Its Romanesque nave, built of fieldstone, dates to around 1200; in the Late Gothic period, the church was altered using brick. The building thus brings together different phases of construction. Its furnishings include a Renaissance altarpiece donated by Corfitz Ulfeldt the Elder. The chancel also contains a gravestone from 1591 showing Axel Brahe and his two wives as skeletons wrapped in shrouds. Donations and commemorative objects in the church are also associated with noble families who lived nearby. The architecture, the history of the donation and the gravestone’s imagery offer different ways to explore the local history of the church and its memorials.

Buildings and places beyond the church also reveal different aspects of the past. Veflinge’s old vicarage stands at Bystævnet 38; it is a well-kept building with three chimneys. During the occupation from 1940 to 1945, Bystævnet in Veflinge was established as a local protest against the occupying power. Veflinge was also a railway town from 1911 to 1966, served by the Nordvestfyenske Jernbane. The distinctive former station building still stands at Lindevej 34 and is privately owned. The town’s former role in the railway network and a surviving building can therefore be considered as separate historical points of reference.

Paths and facilities in Veflinge Kirkeskov

Veflinge Kirkeskov lies just outside Veflinge. Behind the vicarage, it covers an area of 5.6 hectares that has been converted into a recreation area with paths, trees, shrubs, a shelter and an enlarged waterhole. At the edge of Veflinge, the Kirkeskov has a shelter with four to five sleeping places. The shelter can be reached via Veflinge Skovvej, opposite the church; from there, a footpath of about 350 metres leads to the shelter. A fire hut with a fire pit, firewood and seating is about 150 metres away. The two distances refer to different stretches: the path of about 350 metres leads to the shelter, while the roughly 150 metres refers to the distance between the shelter and the fire hut. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.
