Odense offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: the world of Hans Christian Andersen, Danish railway history, historical depictions of rural life, animal experiences and opportunities for cycling. When planning, consider which themes matter most to you. This lets you shape your time in the city around your interests, without requiring every experience to have the same focus.

Andersen, railways and village life on Funen

At H.C. Andersens Hus, you can see original objects, paper cuttings and drawings by Hans Christian Andersen. In the same building, Ville Vau invites children and adults to play with stage props and costumes and let their imaginations run free. In the studio, you can use materials provided by the museum and take your creations home. The museum therefore combines insights into Andersen’s work with a creative activity of your own.

Danmarks Jernbanemuseum offers a different cultural focus, presenting Danish railway history in an authentic engine shed dating from 1954. If you are interested in depictions of historical ways of life, Den Fynske Landsby offers another perspective. The village shows what a village on Funen might have looked like in the 19th century.

At Den Fynske Landsby, interpreters dressed in historical clothing bring the old houses to life in summer, during selected holiday periods and on weekends. They demonstrate activities from everyday farming life in the 19th century. The gardens are also part of this portrayal: their produce is used for cooking on the old stoves in the village kitchens. If you plan a visit, take the seasonal demonstrations and selected dates into account.

Brandts offers another opportunity for creative activities with a family studio that is particularly suitable for children. Together with Ville Vau, this gives you a specific choice if you would also like to include a hands-on creative activity during your stay.

Animal experiences and landscapes

At Odense ZOO, Bøgetoppen is a 250-metre-long treetop walkway reaching heights of up to twelve metres. Visitors can also feed giraffes together with an animal keeper; the availability of these sessions may vary. If feeding the giraffes is important to your plans, check in advance whether a suitable session is available.

Stige Ø is open to everyone, including nature lovers and people who enjoy sports. Viewpoints, places to visit and a distinctive landscape experience characterise this area near Odense. The Viking Route offers a different perspective on the surroundings: this circular route is about 15.5 kilometres long and runs from Åsum along the Odense Å to the city centre and back. Its length and route give you a concrete point of reference if you are considering including it in your plans.

Planning to explore Odense by bike

A 2019 cycling map lists more than 560 kilometres of cycle paths in Odense. There are also several Park & Bike sites, public bicycle pumps and good facilities for parking bicycles. You can include Park & Bike sites in your plans if you want to leave your car and continue by bike. For your current plans, you can check the relevant route and facility information in advance.

Find a hotel to suit your stay

Are you mainly interested in Andersen and the museums, historical depictions of everyday life on Funen, or time for the zoo, the landscape and cycling? These options reflect different interests and are not a prescribed order for your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Odense, compare the details of the individual offers according to the features that matter to you. This will help keep your decision focused on your travel plans.
