Ballen: Beach, Harbor and Syltemade Valley
Accommodation in Ballen
Ballen combines a coastal setting with a river and valley landscape: west of Ballen Havn, the Syltemade Å flows through grazed meadows and natural areas. In the surrounding area, the Syltemade Valley and marked trails add to the nature and hiking opportunities. When looking for a hotel in Ballen, you can plan your trip around the coast, walks, or local history.
Beach, harbor and coast
Ballen Beach is next to the harbor. Just behind the beach, there is a parking area on an open grassy area by the harbor. As facilities may change, please check the municipal information before your visit. The location of the beach and parking area provides a clear reference point for a visit to the water.
Ballen Åhavn is a well-preserved river harbor at the mouth of the Syltemade Å. Ballen Marina is directly east of the river mouth. West of the mouth of the Syltemade Valley is a small coastal cliff made of gray and brown moraine clay.
The coast also offers divers a special connection to the water. Wreck diving at the sunken ferry Ærøsund is possible from the coast near Ballen. Divers use the wreck near Ballen Havn as an artificial reef. Check local diving conditions before planning a dive.
Syltemade Valley and trails
The Syltemade Valley lies near Ballen. It is a 20-meter-deep erosion valley formed by meltwater. The depth gives an idea of the valley's scale, while its formation by meltwater explains its geological shape. The southern half of the valley is protected and can be reached on foot from the parking area on Langegyde road.
A 4.5-kilometer marked section of the Øhavsstien runs through the valley near Ballen. From Ballen Havn, it is also possible to walk along part of the Øhavsstien through the Syltemae Valley. In the surrounding area, the Øhavsstien also passes through the protected coastal forest of Præstens Skov, west of the mouth of the Syltemade Valley. The information answers different planning questions: the 4.5 kilometers refers to the marked section, the Langegyde parking area provides foot access to the protected southern half of the valley, and Ballen Havn is a starting point for walking part of the trail. Trail and access conditions can vary seasonally; check them before your trip.
The history of Ballen and its cultural landscape
Historically, Ballen served as a shipping point. The town was first mentioned in 1551 under the name “Skerningballe.” The cultural landscape of Ø. Skerninge and Ballen was shaped by the land reforms at the end of the 18th century. These details shed light on different aspects of local history: the early mention of the name, Ballen's maritime function, and the creation of a cultural landscape. The year 1551 refers to the first mention of the name; the land reforms mark a later, separate point in the history of the landscape.
