Lundeborg brings together coastal hiking trails, a harbour with a long tradition and traces of a rich trading history. When looking for a hotel in Lundeborg, you can first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on coastal hiking, the historic townscape or a cycling route. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Coastal Paths and Hiking Plans

The Klokkefrøstien is a coastal hiking trail between Lundeborg in the south and Åhuse in the north. Near Lundeborg, it connects to the Øhavsstien. There are ponds near the Klokkefrøstien where tree frogs live, giving the route a specific connection to nature. For planning a longer hike, the section of the Øhavsstien from Svendborg via Broholm to Lundeborg is relevant: it is 35 kilometres long. This distance applies to the specified section of the Øhavsstien, not to the Klokkefrøstien. The details answer different planning questions: the Klokkefrøstien is described by its coastal character and endpoints, while the Øhavsstien is described by the length of a specific section.

Trading History, Harbour and Architecture

Lundeborg is considered Denmark’s oldest known trading site. The excavated beach market near Lundeborg was a seasonal marketplace that operated for 500 years from 200 AD. This means the trading site’s history goes back a long way and significantly predates the later harbour buildings.

Lundeborg Harbour was completed in 1862. The northern harbour basin dates from 1862–1863. The four-winged merchant’s courtyard, with its warehouses, stable and residence, also dates from 1862–1863. Its large warehouse defines the harbour’s appearance and is listed as a historic monument. A notice from 2011 reports an exhibition by the Svendborg Museum in this warehouse. If you plan to visit the exhibition, check access in advance.

Lundeborg Church is another distinctive architectural landmark. It was built as a prayer house in 1896. Unusually, its tower is at the eastern end, while the altar stands at the western end of the nave. The church thus adds a distinctive spatial arrangement to the harbour and trading history.

Momleby in Lundeborg is a workers’ neighbourhood with seven houses built around 1864. Along with the former beach market and the harbour buildings dating from 1862–1863, the approximate construction date of Momleby provides another point of reference for the town’s history.

Cycling, Beach and Places to Eat

Most of the cycling route from Svendborg to Lundeborg follows the Østersøruten, national route 8, which is well signposted. On its stage from Svendborg via Nyborg to Korsør, the Østersøruten passes through Lundeborg. Route markings and details may change; check the information before your ride. Lundeborg therefore offers starting points for both hiking and cycling trips.

Lundeborg Beach is one of five beaches in Svendborg Municipality that are part of the Nordic Blue Flag initiative. There are restaurants in the harbour. If you plan to eat out, check which places are currently open before your trip.
