Vester Skerninge brings together different sides of South Funen: protected nature, trails through forest and countryside, a longer bike ride and local inn culture. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like your trip to focus on. The forest offers short trails for a walk; the Archipelago Trail and the cycling route take you along different routes and through different landscapes.

Forest Trails and the Archipelago Trail

Vester Skerninge Præstegårdsskov covers 3 hectares and has been protected since 23 February 1950. Short, easy-to-walk trails lead through the forest from the car park and down to the coast. The protected area thus combines a compact natural setting with a specific destination for a short walk.

A marked section of the Archipelago Trail is 4.5 kilometres long and follows the Syltemade Ådal. You can reach it on foot from a small car park on Langegyde road. Near Vester Skerninge, the trail also continues up towards Egebjerg Bakker via Stågerup Kohave and Mændenes Løkke, with its rampart. The short forest trails and the marked 4.5-kilometre section give you different route lengths to consider when planning. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season.

Another described section of the Archipelago Trail runs from Fjællebroen via Egebjerg Bakker to Svendborg. You can follow this route using the Geopark app. If you plan to use the app for navigation, check its availability in advance.

Landscape and Natural History

The steep slopes stand out in the Syltemade Ådal, where the river follows its natural course. This gives the landscape a different character from the trails in Vester Skerninge forest. In Egebjerg Bakker, Egebjerg Mølle Naturrum has exhibitions on the natural and cultural history of the surrounding area. It is open around the clock, year-round. Opening information may change, so check before your visit.

The protected area of Rødme Svinehaver is located near Egebjerg Bakker. It is characterised by species-rich vegetation that has developed through centuries of grazing. This long history of grazing is a distinct aspect of South Funen’s natural history, complementing the themes of the river and the forest.

Inn History and Regional Cuisine

Since 1772, Vester Skerninge Kro has served as a meeting place for villagers and travellers on the main road through South Funen. The inn serves lunch and dinner. Its menu focuses on seasonal ingredients, classic inn dishes and local flavours from South Funen. In Vester Skerninge, you can experience both a long inn tradition and a specific offering of regionally inspired cuisine. Menus may change, so it is worth checking the current selection when planning your visit.

Fishing Park and Facilities

Blue Rock Fiskepark covers around 18 hectares. It has two lakes, a children’s lake and a 1.5-kilometre fly-fishing stream. The park’s own fish farm stocks fish weighing 1 to 9 kilograms several times a day. The size of the grounds, the range of waters and the fish farm are all key features of the park.

The grounds have a log cabin with men’s and women’s toilets, a lounge, washing facilities, a fish-cleaning table, a refrigerator and freezer, and a barbecue. If you are taking these facilities into account when planning, confirm the latest information before your visit, as facilities may change.

Explore by Bike

The 34-kilometre cycling tour “Med alle sansers brug” (“Using All the Senses”) takes you through the landscape of South Funen and combines nature, culture and local stories. On the tour, you can leave your bike at the historic Vester Skerninge Kirke. Its stated length and thematic focus help you see this cycling route as a distinct option alongside the shorter forest trails and sections of the Archipelago Trail.
