Marielyst has been a seaside resort on Denmark’s east coast for more than 100 years. The beach and dunes, paths for walking or cycling, and local cultural and leisure activities give the town several facets. If you are looking for a hotel in Marielyst, deciding what matters most to you can help with your travel plans: should your stay be centred mainly on the beach, would you like to spend time outdoors, or are you interested in history, crafts and other activities?

Beach and paths by the water

Marielyst Beach offers swimming opportunities for both summer and winter swimmers. The difference between summer and winter swimming may influence when you travel; both are available at the same beach. White sand and wild dunes shape the landscape. Along the dunes and beach, the dyke offers opportunities for walking and cycling. This places swimming and exercise along the shore side by side as distinct priorities.

Cycling between the coast and the island

For cycling, the “Kyst til kyst” (Coast to Coast) route is another point of reference. It crosses Falster between the Baltic Sea and Guldborgsund, starts and ends at Marielyst Torv, and is fully signposted as Route 418. This identifies a specific starting and ending point in town, as well as the route’s wider course between two bodies of water. By contrast, the dyke offers paths along the dunes and beach, while “Kyst til kyst” crosses Falster. This comparison helps distinguish a coastal cycling option from a route that crosses the island.

History and crafts

The history also spans several periods. A monument on Strandvejen commemorates the 1872 storm surge, which devastated the town and claimed 80 lives. The long history as a seaside resort and this clearly dated event highlight different aspects of the past: one describes the town’s development over many decades, while the other represents a traumatic experience. During the high season, local artisans display paintings, ceramics and willow weaving in the market square. This seasonal focus on crafts adds a different cultural dimension to the historical perspective.

Leisure and regional produce

Beyond the beach and paths, there are two different leisure attractions. Marielyst Gokart & Paintball Center has one track for adults and one for children. Golf & Fun Park in Marielyst has three escape rooms. The Center specifies two types of track, while the Park specifies the number of escape rooms; this lets you choose according to the type of leisure activity that interests you.

GÄrdbutikken Marielyst offers local products such as vegetables, berries, fruit juice, wine, jams and honey. The farm shop offers a different focus from the beach, paths and culture: regional produce takes centre stage. For travellers who also consider local food when choosing a destination, this range of products is another reason to consider Marielyst.
