Nysted lies on Lolland’s south coast; the harbour is at the end of Nysted Nor. Winding streets, idyllic houses and the atmospheric harbour shape the town’s character. From the harbour, you can see Aalholm Castle, considered one of Denmark’s best-preserved medieval castles. Several houses also retain half-timbering from the 17th and 18th centuries. The coastal landscape, the town’s history and its varied routes each give Nysted a distinctive character.

Beach and Harbour

Nysted Beach has shallow, calm water and a lovely sandy seabed. A beach volleyball net, bathing jetty, toilets and changing facilities add to what’s on offer. The beach is especially suitable for young children. The harbour offers a different focus: its location at the end of Nysted Nor and the view of Aalholm Castle shape the character of the south coast. When planning your trip, you can consider the beach, harbour and old streets as different facets of the town.

Buildings and History

Nysted Church is a typical town church with high, bright vaults. Its organ has a façade by Daniel Wroblewski dating from 1777; the instrument was later rebuilt and enlarged. The church has four bells: the oldest dates from the 14th century, and the newest from 1699. The Franciscan monastery in Nysted was founded in 1286.

Another distinctive building is the water tower. It was built in 1912 to supply the town of Nysted and the surrounding farms with water. The tower was restored in 2009; today it serves as a meeting place in town and is one of the earliest reinforced-concrete water towers. It thus combines its original function of supplying water with a role in town life today.

Aarestrups Hus Museum shows how a middle-class home was furnished in the 1830s. Among the museum’s own pieces of furniture belonging to Emil Aarestrup are his doctor’s chair and his poet’s chair. For planning a visit to the Nysted Organ Museum, its current status is important: it has been closed since 20 June 2026; no further concerts, guided tours or other activities are taking place there. Its collection comprises 16 Danish church organs, including playable instruments from the 19th and 20th centuries that are worthy of preservation. The collection remains with the foundation.

Routes by Length and Theme

Rundt om Nysted is a 7-kilometre cultural and nature trail around the town. It follows paths with grass or gravel surfaces and, for a short stretch, a public road. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs. The Danske Digterruter in Nysted is shorter, at 5.2 kilometres, and has ten audio stations. Following the inspiration of poet Emil Aarestrup, it passes the poet’s house, winds through the old streets and follows the harbour; along the way, there are views of Aalholm Castle. The route length can help you choose, while the audio stations and connection to Aarestrup give this route its literary focus.

The nature-rich Oldtidsruten starts in Nysted and is ideal for a cycling trip. The route is 25 kilometres long and passes more than 150 prehistoric monuments. If you’d like to get out on the water, there’s an eastern canoe and kayak route: it starts at Nysted Roklub, passes Skansen and Holten Strand, circles a small island and returns to Nysted. Check the weather and water conditions locally before setting out.

The Nysted Sælsafari seal safari aboard the M/S Drost is an approximately three-hour boat experience where you can see seals on land and in the water. Check departure dates and booking options in advance. The excursions therefore differ not only in theme but also in their stated length: from routes on foot or by bike to a boat experience lasting several hours.
