Several themes come together in Søllested: a historic garden, a Romanesque church, its development as a railway town and opportunities to spend time outdoors. It is worth considering cultural history and outdoor activities separately: they range from a garden with historic features to forest access with clearly defined hours.

Garden, Erratic Boulder and Søllestedgård

The garden at Søllestedgård includes a linden garden pavilion, a bridge over the moat and a linden avenue. Adam Christopher Knuth planted the avenue around 1759. Each feature gives the garden a distinct character: the linden pavilion is a named building, the avenue a row of trees, and the bridge a crossing over the moat. Together, they provide tangible reference points for Søllested’s garden and architectural history.

Another notable name is the erratic boulder Søllestedgårdstenen. It lies about 50 metres south of Søllestedgårdvej; parking is possible at the roadside. This location can be considered independently of the garden features. The Brasseriet at Søllestedgaard is closed and will no longer operate there.

Forest, Park and Kirkestien

Søllested Skov is a private forest. Visitors may use its paths and trails on foot or by bicycle from 6 a.m. until sunset. The permitted modes of travel and the time restrictions are important when planning a visit to the forest. Anyone considering a stay outdoors should take these rules into account.

Trylleparken in Søllested has exercise equipment, green picnic areas and a covered shelter with a fire pit. Kirkestien has a different focus: it combines cycling, hiking or running with experiencing church heritage and open countryside. There are therefore different activities to choose from, without the forest, park and route needing to offer the same things.

Church and Historical Traces

Søllested Kirke is a towerless Romanesque church built of granite ashlar. The description identifies both the architectural style and a distinctive feature of the church, as well as the building material used. The burial chapel is located on the north side of the nave. Eric Steensen and his wife, Barbra Murmand, had it built for Søllestedgård in 1642. Its location by the church and the precise year give the chapel a distinct place in local history.

Finds from the Søllested grave are on display at the National Museum. Before visiting, check whether the finds are currently on display there. This helps put the historical connection to Søllested into context without mistaking the exhibition for a separate local museum.

Railway Town and Cultural History

Søllested’s well-preserved cultural environment as a railway town developed gradually from the 1880s onwards, after the railway between Nykøbing and Nakskov was built. Lollands Højskole operated in Søllested from 1905 to 1996. The two facts refer to different periods in the town’s history: the development of the railway town and the history of an educational institution that operated there.

Near Aalstrup is a protected historic castle site, surrounded by moats on all four sides. Its address is Rødbyvej 45, 4920 Søllested. The four-sided site is another tangible point of reference in the historic surroundings. Together with the garden, church and history of the railway town, it offers an additional perspective on the region’s past.
