Sønderby combines a green, loosely built village with cultural attractions, art and paths on Femø. Those choosing the place for a trip can explore three distinct aspects: the village layout, sites of cultural history, and named paths and natural areas.

Most visitors reach Femø by taking the Femøsund ferry from Kragenæs. The ferry crossing from Kragenæs to Femø takes 55 minutes. As the crossing time may change under future ferry arrangements, check the operator’s timetable before your trip.

Village Layout and Landscape

Sønderby’s village layout is considered very original and uniform. The farms were arranged around the village green. Sønderby is green and loosely built, with abundant vegetation and a few small open fields. Together with Nørreby, Sønderby is one of the two villages on Femø located at the center of a star-shaped field layout. Living hedges border the fields, and straight paths radiate out from the villages. The location of the farms describes the layout of the village, while the hedges and paths define the pattern of the fields. As you explore, Sønderby feels somewhat winding.

Culture and History

Femø Præstegård in Sønderby serves as a cultural center; Femø Bibliotekspunkt is located in the same building at Kirkehældevej 29. Femø Museum is also in Sønderby. On display are local objects: old tools from various trades, a large stone collection, kitchen utensils and taxidermied animals. At Sønderby Gadekær stands Holger Wederkinch’s limestone sculpture “Los, Ræv og Urhane,” from 1922. Another important focus of cultural history is the church of Femø’s wall paintings, which are particularly important for understanding the Reformation debate.

Paths and Nature

Take Damstrædet to reach Eventyrstrædet in Sønderby. Fairy tales, trolls and witches are hidden among the old poplars. Troldestien is located by Madsens Vænge. “Labyrinten” is a 200-meter-long network of paths laid out after the model of the paths and roads on Femø. You can walk in Birkemosens Weidengarten from 7 a.m. until sunset; check the current hours before your visit. Labyrinten can be described in terms of its length and model, while the willow garden is defined by the time of day when you can walk there. The planning considerations therefore differ: here, they concern size and design; there, the available time period.

Femø Storytelling Festival

The Femø Storytelling Festival takes place every year on the second full weekend in June. The 2026 program included storytelling events in the garden of Femø Præstegård in Sønderby. For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the June weekend recurs every year, while the garden specifically featured in the 2026 program. Check the dates for the relevant edition.
