If you’re looking for a hotel in Truust, the history and landscapes of the surrounding area can help you plan your trip. These include the former school in Truust, the Trækstien in the wider region, and nature and cultural destinations nearby. The former school is in Truust; Sminge Sø and Tvilum Priory Church are destinations in the surrounding area.

Trækstien and the Gudenå: two different lengths

In the wider region, the Trækstien follows the Gudenå. The Gudenå is Denmark’s longest river, measuring 152.8 kilometres from source to mouth. The Trækstien itself is about 74 kilometres long and runs between Silkeborg and Randers. The two figures therefore describe different things: the total length of the river and the length of the route between its endpoints. The Gudenåstien opened on 28 March 2026 and is identical to the Trækstien.

The Trækstien was established in the second half of the 19th century to transport goods from the paper mill in Silkeborg to the harbour in Randers. The path was raised on the section from Alling Å to Kongensbro. Nearby, the connecting path to the Trækstien at Kongensbro is 0.2 kilometres long. When water levels are high, parts of the Trækstien can be very wet and may be partially flooded. If you’re planning a trip there, check the path conditions before your visit.

Nature and cultural destinations in the surrounding area

Nearby, Sminge Sø lies northeast of Silkeborg. It is one of the region’s most bird-rich areas. An information board by the lake shows drawings of birds that can be spotted there. This destination brings together the landscape and a specific guide to the region’s birdlife.

Tvilum Priory Church is also nearby, on the opposite bank of the Gudenå. To get a closer look at the church, you’ll need to cross Tvilum Bridge. Its location on the opposite bank and the bridge provide a clear point of reference when planning your visit to the church.

History in Truust and Kongensbro

The former school in Truust was built in 1882. It has a high preservation value, corresponding to SAVE 3. This makes the building a clearly dated part of the local history and adds a specific point of reference in Truust to the broader history of the Trækstien.

Nearby, Kongensbro Bro og Kro is considered one of the old inns used by the historic barge haulers, at an important crossing. South of Kongensbro, along the Trækstien, you’ll also find “Æ Swot Man”, a tarred post. The barge haulers would loop the rope around the post when pulling a barge around a bend in the river. This example brings a specific working technique from the history of river traffic to life.

Canoe trips and overnight stays

Before your canoe trip, you can stay overnight at Søhøjlandets Camping. Kongensbro Teltplads has toilets, drinking water, fire pits, firewood, tables and benches, electricity, and three shelters. If you include these options in your travel plans, check the current availability of overnight accommodation and the information about site capacity in advance.
