Korning combines local history with a nature trail along the Gesager Å. Around the village, you’ll find both a specific circular route and historic points of interest near the church and in Korning Gammelby.

Nature Trail and River Landscape

The Natursti Korning is just southwest of the village and is 1.5 km long. This circular trail starts at Korning Kro and leads through the area along the Gesager Å. The route is designated for pedestrians; it may be temporarily closed due to hunting. Check that the trail is accessible before setting out.

The Gesager Å has cut into the moraine landscape through erosion, creating slopes 10 to 15 metres high. The area around Korning also includes forests and fields. The Gesager Å runs north and west of the village. From Sporet i Korning, you can see the remains of the weir in the river south of the old bridge.

The countryside around Korning is used for walking, cycling and other outdoor activities. The river area west of the village has a nature trail, a shelter and a fire pit. The Bygholm Å also runs west of Korning towards Klaks Mølle. It is distinct from the Gesager Å, which runs north and west of the village.

The river landscape can also be a point of reference for anglers. The fishing rights of Horsens og Omegns Sportsfiskerforening extend in the Korning area from a few kilometres upstream of Korning Bro to Lovbyvej, just before the river flows into Bygholm Sø. Some stretches are on both banks, while others are on just one. Access and permissions may depend on local rules.

Village History Around the Church and Village Pond

Korning’s historic village setting is centred around the church and the gently curving village street, Korning Gammelby. The area around Korning Kirke is designated as a cultural environment because of its connection to De Stærke Jyder. A memorial stone near the church marks the former site of a smithy. Hans Nielsen Smed, one of the founders of De Stærke Jyder, had his roots there. Schooling has been provided in Korning since around 1740.

Korning Kro also has a layered history. The present building at Korningvej 143 was built in 1904. It was first used as a meeting house, later as a temperance hotel, and from 1968 as an inn. These successive uses link the building to different chapters of local life.

A description dated 15 June 2011 recounts the extensive renovation of the village pond and its revival as a meeting place and space for residents to talk. The distinctive cultural environment in Korning Gammelby was preserved during the renovation. The village pond and street thus complement the historic points of interest around the church.

Korning Lokalhistoriske Forening organises excursions and themed days that offer insights into the region’s history. A storytelling trail connects the village’s history with the nature around Korning. This makes both local history and the landscape along the Gesager Å central to planning your visit.
