Skalstrup on Nissum Fjord
Accommodation in Skalstrup
Skalstrup connects two specifically named landscapes: Nissum Fjord and Skalstrup Skov. The forest lies about 1 km north of the fjord. Nissum Fjord is designated as an international bird protection area. Large flocks of migratory birds gather around the fjord in spring and autumn. If birdwatching is an important part of your trip, you can take these seasons into account when choosing your travel dates. The fjord and the forest also offer different things to explore: migratory birds by the water, as well as walking trails and a forest playground in Skalstrup Skov.
Walking trails and forest in Skalstrup Skov
Skalstrup Skov was one of four new, larger forests established between 1991 and 1997. Each of the four forests covered 125 to 155 ha. The forest has two walking trails, one 3 km long and the other 5.3 km long. The different trail lengths give you a concrete basis for comparing the distances you want to walk. There is also a forest playground. Skalstrup Skov campsite has a shelter with room for 7 to 9 people.
Another route with three starting points
The marked Harpøth Havn–Damhus Å Havn route is about 4 km long in total. Its three starting points are Damhus Å Havn, Harpøth Havn and Sandbæk Næs. Unlike the walking trails in Skalstrup Skov, this route is identified by several named starting points; the forest trails can be compared by their respective lengths. This gives you two different reference points when planning: the trails in the forest and the route named after the harbours.
Harbours and access to the fjord
Damhus Å Havn has shelters, a campfire site and a picnic shelter. Near Skalstrup, you can access Nissum Fjord at the mouth of Damhus Å. At Harpøth Havn, boat owners can launch their boat and head out onto the fjord. The harbour was built in 2001; its capacity is stated as 45 boats and may change. If this figure is important for your plans, check the capacity information in advance. You can also swim and use the barbecue area at Harpøth Havn.
Beaches and windsurfing
There are several small, child-friendly sandy beaches with shallow water near and around Skalstrup on Nissum Fjord. Beach conditions can vary by season. Windsurfing is also possible on the fjord near Skalstrup; conditions depend on the weather. When planning activities by the water, season and weather are two separate factors: beach conditions can change seasonally, while windsurfing depends on the weather.
