Ringkøbing offers traces of the town’s history, a museum focused on regional World War II history and paths along the Vonå and Ringkøbing Fjord. The town was granted market-town status (Købstad) in 1443. Torvet, the harbour and the routes offer different highlights for your stay: here, you can explore the town’s history as well as the landscape around the fjord.

Town Centre and Getting Around

The central square, Torvet, is the heart of Ringkøbing. Historic houses and restored streets lead from there to the harbour, giving the connection between the town centre and the water its distinctive character. The Vægterruten map is available to help you find your way along the town’s historical trails. It shows historic buildings and works of art, with pictures, location details and QR codes. The map lets you explore both topics together. If you plan to use it during your visit, check its availability in advance.

Museum and History

The Ringkøbing Museum explores the history of the Second World War in West Jutland, including the concrete structures along the Atlantic Wall. Its focus therefore covers both regional wartime history and the physical traces of the Atlantic Wall. The exhibition “Flyvere i natten” brings the history of the Second World War to life through sound, film, original objects and large-format images. The museum also presents temporary exhibitions; what is on offer may change.

Ringkøbing Church also brings together local history and a cultural experience. It dates from the first half of the 15th century and has been extended several times. Its reconstructed Baroque organ was inaugurated on Palm Sunday in 2019. It attracts organ specialists from Denmark and abroad and offers the chance to enjoy concerts. The concert programme may vary, so check it if you are planning to combine your visit with a concert.

Paths Along the Vonå and Fjord

Ringkøbing Stier is a walking and cycling route along the Vonå and Ringkøbing Fjord. It includes a blue route measuring 3.5 km and a red route measuring 14 km. The red route is therefore four times as long as the blue one—a significant difference if you are comparing the routes by distance. There are picnic facilities, toilets and shelters along the route. As these facilities are maintained locally, it may be worth checking their condition before setting out.

The northern section of the Vonå is part of Natura 2000 site No. 66, “Stadil Fjord and Vest Stadil Fjord”. If the protected-area designation is important for your plans, check the current official boundaries.

By Ringkøbing Fjord

At Sorte Bakker on Ringkøbing Fjord, you’ll find shallow water, a small sandy beach and a bathing jetty. Swimming conditions and supervision may vary. Sorte Bakker is also a starting point for windsurfing and kitesurfing on the fjord. Conditions change depending on the wind direction, so although both watersports share a starting point, they do not necessarily have the same conditions.

Ringkøbing Harbour includes Smakkejollen, a harbour basin, bridges, breakwaters and a marina. From the outer breakwater, you can look out over Ringkøbing Fjord. The harbour and the beach offer different perspectives on the water: one brings together boats and harbour facilities, while the other combines shallow water with a small sandy beach and a bathing jetty.
