Binderup between river nature and mill history
Accommodation in Binderup
Binderup is shaped by the Binderup Å and the history of the former mill site. Nearby, trails and geological sites around Vokslev add to its natural appeal. The destination thus brings together a river, historic land use and excursion destinations with different geographical connections.
The Binderup Å and nature watching
The Binderup Å is one of Denmark’s very few chalk streams and has high water quality. Its trout population reproduces naturally, so stocking with juvenile fish is no longer necessary. In the winter months, dippers regularly visit the river, including near Huul Mølle. These are two distinct aspects of nature: the trout population is characteristic of the river, while the dippers are a seasonal sighting associated with winter. If you are considering when to travel, this distinction between the river’s characteristics and seasonal birdwatching offers a practical point of reference.
Mill history and planned restoration
A weir at Binderup Mølle is believed to have been in place at this site since 1500 or even earlier. At the former mill site, water rights were used to establish a fish farm. These details relate to the historic use of the site and river. A planned restoration project at Binderup Mølle is a separate matter: it proposes decommissioning three weirs in the Binderup Å and restoring the river’s natural course. The weir, its possible early origins, the former fish farm and the planned project therefore represent different aspects of the mill’s history.
Trails and geology in nearby Vokslev
The marked Vokslev Kultur- og Natursti is located near Binderup. The trail is about 2.5 km long and offers a circular walk around the Binderup Å. An excavation lies along the trail on a slope beside the river, on the way towards Vokslev. A 2 to 8 centimetre-thick grey-brown layer of clay is visible there. This layer gives the trail a specific geological connection; the length and circular route describe the offering in nearby Vokslev.
Vokslev is also part of a cycling route with a geological theme in Himmerland. This distinguishes the regional cycling route from the marked circular walk around the Binderup Å: one is classified as a geological themed route in Himmerland, while the other is a roughly 2.5 km loop in the nearby area. The limestone pits at Vokslev are another destination in their own right. Of the limestone pits on either side of Huulmøllevej, today only the pit on Naturstyrelsen’s property is accessible.
Fishing on the Binderup Å
Lystfiskeriforeningen Binderup Aa has about 15 km of fishing waters along the Binderup Å; sea trout fishing is also possible in the river. Paths are maintained along most stretches. There are good opportunities for anglers with limited mobility, especially near the huts and car parks. This angling perspective is a distinct practical aspect of the river, complementing seasonal nature watching and mill history.
