Kastrup: Church, Storå and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Kastrup
This can help you decide in advance whether, during your stay, you would rather explore architectural and church history or river and landscape topics. Visiting the church is subject to clear time restrictions, while the Storå section can be understood in terms of its length, endpoints and fish habitats.
Kåstrup Church: Visiting Hours and History
Kåstrup Church is open to visitors from 08:00 to 16:00 Monday through Saturday, unless a church service or other activity is taking place. On Sundays, it is open only in connection with a church service. If you plan to visit the church, take the day of the week and these conditions into account.
The church is a Romanesque village church. Its oldest parts are built from granite blocks; the Romanesque baptismal font is also made of granite and is the oldest item of inventory. This gives you two distinct points of reference when looking at the church: its oldest building fabric and a single historic furnishing. In the chancel floor in front of the altar rail there is also a tombstone of black limestone, dated 1685, for councilman Anders Pedersøn of Thisted. This dated tombstone adds a personal memorial to the perspective on the architecture and furnishings.
The church’s institutional history can also be understood through two dates. In 1454, the right of patronage over Kåstrup Church was transferred to Mariager Abbey. In 1712, the church came under the jurisdiction of Vestervig Abbey. The two dates mark distinct historical milestones; they form a chronology of their own, alongside the Romanesque building history and details of the furnishings.
Storå: Course and Fish Habitats
The restored stretch of the Storå is around six kilometres long. It begins upstream at Troldborgvej, south of the airport in Tved, and ends downstream at Kåstrup Bridge. Troldborgvej and the bridge thus mark the two ends of the section described. Unlike the church, a single building, the focus here is on a longer stretch of water with clearly named endpoints.
Upstream of Kåstrup Bridge, spawning and nursery areas were once established by the county. The municipal consultation of 30 November 2023 described this section at the time as the only stretch of flowing water on the Storå that met the fish population target. In the same consultation, the area around Kåstrup Bridge was described as a special area with very high fish production. This temporal context makes the ecological description a distinct aspect of the Storå, alongside its course and length.
Landscape and Historic Transport Link
The landscapes also vary within Kåstrup Parish. The western part is gently hilly and shaped by the Ice Age. The eastern and northern parts contain extensive areas of bog and meadow, including Nørrekær and Østerkær. The old cliffs of the Stone Age sea separate these areas from the higher-lying land. Thus, within the parish, the hill country contrasts with the bog and meadow areas farther east and north.
The historic transport link includes Kåstrup Trinbræt, a railway halt on the Thisted–Fjerritslev line. This railway connection adds another facet to the local history alongside the church records and the development of the Storå. When comparing hotels in Kastrup, you can choose your focus based on whether you are particularly interested in the Romanesque church, the dated church history, or the river and landscape areas.
