Toftum has an open settlement pattern, with farms and houses scattered across the area. It is also home to two listed buildings with different histories: the National Museum’s Kommandørgård and Toftum School. The landscape, too, is shaped by different directions. In the Juvre and Toftum landscape area, meadows extend eastwards to Juvre Dike; from Toftum or Juvre, you can walk westwards through the dunes along old sunken lanes. If you are looking for hotels in Toftum, these cultural and landscape features can help you decide how the area fits with your travel interests.

Kommandørgård: Architecture and Furnishings

The National Museum’s Kommandørgård is a listed property in Toftum, distinguished by its North Frisian architectural style. The residence is richly furnished with painted panels, carved woodwork and tiles from Holland-Friesland. The property thus combines a distinctive architectural style with several specific interior features. The skeleton of a 15-metre-long sperm whale is also on display in Kommandørgården. This natural history exhibit adds a different focus to the themes of architecture and furnishings, making it of interest to travellers who are curious about natural history as well as architectural history.

Toftum School and Its History

Toftum School offers another perspective on local history. It was built in 1784 using the families’ own funds and was in use from 1784 to 1874. The dates are clear: 1784 is both the year it was built and the start of its period of use; 1874 marks the end of that period. The school’s history is therefore not just the story of a building, but also of a clearly defined period of use. The school is only 150 m from Kommandørgården. The short distance makes the two historic sites easy to compare without conflating their different functions.

Open Landscapes and Old Paths

To the south, the scattered farms and houses border a very beautiful, undeveloped, heath-like area. In the Juvre and Toftum landscape area, meadows extend eastwards to Juvre Dike. Westwards, you can walk from Toftum or Juvre through the dunes along old sunken lanes. These paths were once used to drive livestock: their present use for walking and their former purpose belong to different periods. Along the entire western side of Rømø, strips of meadow are known as “beach.” West of the Juvre dunes, some of these strips preserve so-called “dæld”—water holes for livestock. Here, “beach” refers to the strips of meadow along the western side. The edge of the settlement, meadows, dunes and old paths each offer a different glimpse of the landscape.
