Kravlund’s local history spans several periods: from the prehistoric classification of the protected round barrow Knakhøj to records of its name and settlement, as well as an event in 1762. Alongside these, a description from 2014 offers a landscape view of two avenues. The topics differ in nature and can be considered side by side: a round barrow, specific historical dates, and a description of tree species and direction.

History of the Name and Settlement

Kravlund has been recorded under the name “Krakelundt” since the end of the 12th century. The Kravlund Skole (Kravlund School) is also part of the local history in 1903. Around 1770, Kravlund had two farms and four smallholders’ holdings. These details trace different historical reference points: an early recorded form of the name, the Kravlund Skole in 1903, and the composition of the settlement around 1770.

In 1850, Kravlund was described as almost as large as Tinglev. This adds a different measure to the details about farms and smallholders’ holdings. The figures from around 1770 count settlement holdings; the comparison from 1850 relates the size of Kravlund at the time to Tinglev. Together, the two details offer different perspectives on the local history.

The Wagon Train in October 1762

On 12 October 1762, a large wagon train from Flensburg arrived at Kravlund Kro. It brought 157 families, with a total of 549 colonists recruited from southern Germany. The precise date and place of arrival provide a clear framework for this chapter. The two figures also serve different purposes: 157 is the number of families, while 549 is the total number of colonists. In Kravlund’s local history, this dated event sits alongside records of the name and settlement from other periods.

Knakhøj in the Kravlund Field

Knakhøj is a protected prehistoric round barrow in the Kravlund Field. Its dimensions are given as 4.5 × 31 metres. The name, prehistoric classification, protected status and measurements together provide the specific details about this mound. Alongside the historical details about the name and settlement, it offers a reference point from a much earlier period.

Two Avenues, Two Directions

A walking report from 2014 describes a small oak avenue that led to Kravlund at the time. The same report describes a rowan avenue on the other side of Kravlund that extended almost as far as Tinglev at the time. It thus identifies two avenues with different tree species and directions: the oak avenue led to Kravlund, while the rowan avenue extended almost as far as Tinglev on the other side. This gives two distinct landscape reference points. These descriptions of the avenues and their respective directions complement the historical details and help place Kravlund in context.
